I really wish Bethesda would allow for fuller female body types. That's one of the first mods that shows up when a new Fallout or Elder Scrolls game gets released. The male body lets you choose anything in between 6'0"/150lbs to 6'0"/220lbs, while the female body options are only 5'6"/100lbs to 5'6"/130lbs

Fallout 4 had a great setting and plenty of interesting side quests and Characters.

Its main plot sucked in the context of it being a Fallout game. It would have made far more sense for the Sole Survivor to have been a Companion and keep the same goals.

The factions all sucked and the Institute was stupid as hell.

Gameplay was fine, but it lost too many RPG elements.

It's a nice game for when you want to mindlessly kill shit, but it's not really a Fallout game.

The worst part is that it could have EASILY been a great Fallout game with some fixes. But Bethesda fucked up.

Sad that thought out video game discussion has to take place on a porn board.
These last 2 months, I have sought to find why people love fallout 1, 2, and Vegas; and why those same people hate 3 and 4.
I played 1 and 2 for the first time ever, and will note compared to 3&4:
*MUCH darker atmosphere. Especially 1. Between the amazing soundtrack, the grim cinematics, gameplay, and environment; the series didn't receive a sense of humor until 2. And even then it's a mixture of very dark, lowbrow humor contrasting the horror of the apocalypse. Vegas was basically a callback to what made the series great. 3&4 seem neutered, colored in, and kid- friendly. Especially 4. There's no sense of kicking about the desiccated corpse of a once-great America. No contrasting comparisons to how motherfucking great the vault dwellers have it compared to the horror and hopelessness of the wastes.
Drugs and sex take a backseat for Bethesda, especially in 4.
In 2 you could white-knight your way into a village girls bed, get discovered the next day by her father, and be forced into a shotgun wedding the same day; making her a permanent companion.
Or smooth talk your way into the bed of a powerful mob-lords wife/daughter; And accidentally impregnate her with your kid.
In 3 you get black screen fade-outs, and In 4 you get absolutely nothing. Maybe some cute line from a romanced companion after you sleep.
The karma system make more sense in 1, 2, and Vegas as well. For example, In 1 you come across a place called junktown. You get 2 options. Side with the lawful sheriff of the town by rooting out a crimelord and destroying his business; or side with the crimelord and kill the sheriff and his officers.
While 3 would leave it at that, in 1 your choice determines wether Junktown stays a desolate, lawfull little trading post; or a major hub of gambling and vice, sheltering hundreds from the wastes.

I guess people hate 3 and 4 because of lack of character sovereignty. In 3 you have no choice but to be the good guy. You have to side with the brotherhood. You have to bring pure water to the wastes. There is no great arch-nemesis, no foil. You get to decide if you poison the water though.
In 4 you could at least navigate factions. But it basically separates into the "lawful good, chaotic good, neutral good, and lawful evil" factions.
Whoever you side with basically decides if there's a radioactive crater where the MIT ruins used to be.
You still have to spend most the game *heavy_rain_SHAWN_glitch.mp4*'ing your way across a colorful wasteland.

What irritated me about 3 was that If you convinced Fawkes to go into the radioactive room and do the logical thing because he has rad resistance, it makes you out to be some kind of an asshole for doing that. "hurr durr the lone wandurrurr dindu wut his daddy did with self sacrifice, hurrr durr" I mean sure, in Broken Steel the Lone Wanderer is recovered somehow but that seemed like a really gay ass thing to do, especially concerning there could have been multiple outcomes. I'd say the main reason FO4 sucked was a pretty consistent problem of Bethesda's. I have a number of issues but the main one was "Why is the Institute doing this" and "what are the stakes"

Institute is making synths and mutants... why? And sending them above ground in huge numbers to do... what? And if they defeat everyone then... what? In their ending they're still planning on hiding away indefinitely.

Everyone else is in opposition to these guys, the plot revolves around them and they're just vague and evil. The game is a series of post-apocalyptic set-pieces with no real greater reasoning than it sounded cool.

Pretty accurate descriptions of them I'd say. From what I've seen, the fallout games seem to be pretty good at what they set out to accomplish. A lot of old people felt alienated by 3 and 4 after coming from the previous because of the shift in direction. They wanted that table top feel with all the choice having an impact, and not just getting railroaded into playing a good guy just because. Like in 2nd you could join the slavers guild and hunt for slaves, no invulnerable kids, prostitution, gambling, junkies, mafia all over New Reno. First had uniqe death animations for some npcs. And those allso had a possibility to skip the final boss. In first you just go deeper, rig the nuke and run off. In sekond you can't realy skip Frank Horrigan, but you can win that fight without even shooting at him yourself. All you need is 5-6 superstimpaks to kill a president silently, take his card, and some investments in persuasion to recruit anclave soldiers in the room room right before the Horrigan(you have unlimited tries, if you fail to persuade once).
The only cool thing I remember about F3 is a possibility to demolish a Megatonn.
New Vegas did the job better than F3. And the DLCs were realy interresting.

There's really nothing to appreciate about that game, something I could at least do with 3. Fallout 4 is legitimately one of the most disappointing, boring, brain dead experiences I've ever had the displeasure of having. Telling me to find something to appreciate about it would be like telling me to stop complaining if a waiter served me a plate of dogshit, and that I should just try and find something enjoyable about my meal. Fallout 4 is a step back in every regard from the previous entries in the series outside of the sheer gunplay and graphics upgrade, and by how popular the game has been, will likely serve as the ideal for future games.

As far as Bethesda's concerned, it stands to gain nothing from attempting to add "complication" to the Fallout series, and alienate the audience of low IQ mongoloid normies that it has attracted, and will go ahead with appealing to the lowest common denominator who's only interest in the Fallout series is exploring a post apocalyptic wasteland and blowing things up. So, yes, in all essence, Fallout 4 has killed the series, in the sense that it no longer has a future worth investing time and money in.

I agree with the substance of your critique. In terms of plot, skills, dialogue, F4 was a major step back from NV.

That said I liked a few of things about F4. 1) The main quest was better than F3. Searching for a stolen child is a lot better motivator than looking for the dad who ran out. It's even a bit more plausable than suddenly deciding to go after a crime boss who shot you in the head.

2) There were some decent little moments. The crew of the constitution; the vault where they were breeding super-soldiers; the intrigue between the raider factions over Red's kidnapped sister; the quarry/death cult; they don't add up to much, but there are fun moments to run into.

3) It is really really pretty. I know that doesn't count for much, but if they do get a third party developer to make a west coast iteration, they could so something great with the assets.

4) As much as I hate to admit it; the shoot, loot, build, repeat loop is satisfying. Even if I did eventually realize I was building a series of brutal utilitarian compounds watched over by automated machine gun turrets on what looked like guard towers. It was still nice to have rebuilding be part of a post apocalyptic game.

The problem wasn't THAT your character is voice acted, but that because your character was voice acted it SEVERELY limits things. In the old games you could have unique dialog because of certain perks. Modders could throw in any new lines they wanted.

FO4 was a kick to the gut. It's dialogue choices were non existent. Yes, yes, sarcastic yes and no (yes later).

Lots of people bitching and moaning about how good and / or evil you're allowed to be in FO4.

I've played some of 1 and 3, none of 2 and NV, but I've played hundreds of games, both tabletop and v, and I think the factions in FO4 are actually really interesting and well rounded.

Sure, the minutemen are a little boring and paladin-esque, but they have infighting and faction disputes, so that makes them conflicting.

But the other 3 groups literally think they're doing the right thing (and they aren't, because they all have grey morality.)

To me, that's beautiful and ponderous.

Do you help the Railroad? They're just rescuing androids and rewriting them. Some become evil and have to be killed. And all the people they murder and allow to die just for the occasional success? Is it WORTH all that?

BOS are Murica to a T, denying everyone else all the toys they hoarde (power armor, nukes, vertibirds) and using that power to strike people down. Is it arrogance? Is it determination? Admirable? Eviable? Or villainous?

And then, the institute. They see the world above as tainted beyond repair, so they use it to run experiments so they can understand the world and maybe fix it by expanding their operations, essentially wiping the slate clean, but ensuring that life on the surface can provide us with the knowledge and resources needed to make a better tomorrow.

They're all good, all bad, all a mix. I like that you can see good and evil in all the groups, and that nobody is a holy knight or a moustache twirling villain. It's way more complex that way to me.

First of all, there are plenty of monsters that were inventions of more recent things like D&D in those threads, so don't try to use that as grounds for dismissing Deathclaws.

Second, there were plenty of monsters (especially from old-school mythology) who were bred from animals, and plenty that didn't have human-like intellect.

Third, the fact that Deathclaws are a combination of chameleon and human DNA is significant. It's only tangentally related to all the discussion going on, but it's something that's bothered me:

Have you noticed, especially in Fallout 3, Bethesda really focused a lot more on the history of the world that was? It felt like they had difficulty in making a world that felt at all real without having to look back to the past.

In NV and such, you don't get told all that often about the history of the world before. There's a lot more focus on what is currently going on. I think people would argue Fallout 4 does the same, but at best I feel like there's a focus on the current conflict, and even then the entire intro devotes itself to telling the story before apocalypse happens. I can't say why, but it feels like the wrong direction to go.

You're confusing the super mutants from different games.

The super mutants on the west coast (Fallout 1, 2, NV, Tactics, and probably BOS) definitely have genitals. There's no mention of whether they get particularly large and veiny or not, but sex is possible (as demonstrated by bringing Marcus to the Cat's Paw in F2), and they were intact enough for the Master to assume super mutants had no fertility problems. In fact, he had to question a female mutant to learn they were sterile, so they probably ejaculate as well. There's no specific mention of what happens to "secondary sexual characteristics", but their lack of visible body fat probably accounts for their lack of visible breasts.

Super mutants in the Capital Wasteland have no dicks. These super mutants, presumably created using a different strain of FEV, explicitly lose their sexual characteristics (and also come out much dumber than west coast mutants, but that's neither here nor there).

Commonwealth super mutants (Fallout 4) may or may not have genitals. There is no mention either way, so far as I know, with the possible exception of Strong not knowing what a pissing contest is (which is very, very weak evidence, given his stupidity).
