Out of genuine curiosity, what makes a thigh gap appealing? Like, what makes a thigh gap better or worse? Are there different types? Not trying to bait or start anything, but a lot of guys in my college/general area are really into it and I'm too antisocial (spergy) to ask anyone in person

Because the thighs are a natural place for women to put on weight, a thigh gap is an indicator of low body fat. This invokes a feeling in the caveman part of the brain that a woman with a thigh gap would be healthy and fit enough to bear and raise strong children. Other indicators of low body fat are visible hip bones on the abdomen, just above the waist; and prominent collarbones.
I personally despise fatties, but they're hard to avoid in the online dating scene because they'll take flattering pics (myspace angle). However, if they have a shot of cleavage with no visible collarbones, I know she's a salad-dodger, so into the trash she goes.

Cave man brains are into fat. Since thats what you need to survive a harsh winter and create another human being inside you.
People are into thigh gap for cultural reasons not evolutionary reason.
You are just a fat shaming asshat not some alpha that is "helping to keep the species strong"

"Muh fertility goddess!"
Since neither of us provided sources to back up our claims, I'll provide one:
https://phys.org/news/2015-08-evolutionary-key-females-physically.html
Summary: The University of Aberdeen did a study involving 1300 men and women from UK and nine other countries, including ones in Asia and Africa who had been exposed to famine. When asked to rate pictures of women on their attractiveness, the thinnest ones were consistently ranked most attractive. This came as a surprise to the ones running the study.
Per Professor John Speakman, who coordinated the study (emphasis mine), "I am delighted to have been involved in this international collaboration that has revealed evolutionary aspects of what people regard as attractive across diverse cultures. SETTING THIS INTO AN EVOLUTIONARY FRAMEWORK ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND WHY WE PERCEIVE THINNESS IN FEMALES TO BE SO ATTRACTIVE. Importantly it also suggests that historical exposure to famine has not been an important factor."
