Hmm. If memory serves, Pandora gets a lot of light reflected onto it from the star by the gas giant Polyphemus that it orbits, which is blue.

Could be that the blue colouration is due to some protein, as said earlier, that fulfills a role similar to melanin in a human body where it blocks some of the reflected solar radiation from the gas giant.

Which, if I remember my old physics lessons properly, should be primarily towards the blue end of the visible spectrum because the rest of the light would've been absorbed.

blue is a real popular color so it's probably no coincident it's used so often. Na'vi skin is one of the best as far as blue aliens go imo, with the stripes and the bioluminescencent dots.
