There's definitely *something* about this that factors into the fetish. For example, I have no interest in a mermaid who who can become human by drying off or whatever, or a TF scenario where a woman becomes a mermaid. In the first instance, it's kind of, "well that's boring, what was the point?" and in the latter, it's not a real mermaid, so again, meh.

I suppose that in a globalized scenario you could mix things up by having both kinds of transformations happening (and even more, if there is such a thing). In a situation where it's taking victims weeks or even months to finish changing, I'd imagine the women who end up transforming from the spine out would at least be able to keep their ability to walk a lot longer than women whose legs start to atrophy right from the start into split tail-halves.

There's other form factors to consider, too, that so many different artists have had answers for that could make every woman's transformation unique - where do the gills come in? Behind the jaws? Under the ribs? How long should tails be? Does the human half remain completely human (aside from gills) or do they also sometimes also grow fins, scales, change skin color, etc? Where does the anus and vaginal opening go? Do those orifices remain human, too, or do they just transform along with everything else? Are women's reproductive organs changed so they can only breed with fish, or are they still somehow able to breed with men (or both?)

It would also be tempting to make it so that some women can breathe just fine out of water, but the sadist in me would love to see what solutions everybody cooks up to keep women breathing when they're landlocked, or all the women in that local area won't fit into the nearest bodies of water or aquariums.

Same with all women doomed to eventually lose the ability to walk - but one bonus of such an incredibly slow transformation would be that society would at least have a little time to figure out how to care for increasingly helpless women, assuming society somehow realizes (and accepts) exactly what's happening soon enough to prepare for the mermaidification of half the species...
