One of the main reason why I don't mind remakes is that it's a chance to try a different face style on a character.

All artists have different styles but it's also good to see something closer to a series' respective style or if not that a face design that's a bit more "Mask" like.

Doesn't have to be close to the source material but at least give the idea that they're wearing a Mask and not just green facepaint.

1) Either the tease of Cameron Diaz's character simply holding The Mask at the end made me thing there was gonna be a scene where she puts it on BEFORE the big kiss scene to close it on a comical note.

I think he just wanted to be compensated for his skill and a lot of his fans just wanted a free ride.

I personally thought it was something like creator's guilt. He had a good yield on photo manipulating Mask faces but it ended up inspiring a lot of low-hanging fruit content with just palette swapping the face and leaving it at that.

Let's face it, a lot of the problem with the She-Mask community is that there's a lack of quality control in content. The curse of many fetishes on the internet, granted. And with less artists no less.

Honestly, that's part of why I've been slowing myself down. I started writing stuff because the content I wanted didn't exist, and I hoped folks reading what I wrote would get inspired and do their own stuff. I hoped we might actually get some new, creative, quality content, but over the two and a half years I've been doing it it's only gotten worse and worse. These threads are depressing. 95% of these pics I've already seen, and even the best pics just aren't doing it for me anymore. I'm tired of trying to fill the void in terms of content for my fetishes (Symbiote/Living Costume/Mask Transformation) and having folks begging me to fullfill their specific desires in my stories for them for no compensation. By now I've literally written a novel's worth of content, and the only reason I'd do that much work for next to no pay is because I personally enjoy it.

At this point I wonder if most she-mask content creators are even into it for the same reason I am. For me the appeal comes from the idea of the transformation itself, and the idea of there being something transformative that can be put on and taken off. It's the idea of unleashing a side of yourself, ironically through covering part or all of your body, and being able to act out fantasies that the self underneath the costume can't due to social convention, lack of power, or a fear of personal repercussion. All I see nowadays are anime characters with green faces - and the green face itself isn't the appeal, it's the contrast between the before and after.

Quality and content are two separate things. My grievance isn't with WHO wears the Mask but how it's drawn. If you have an artist who can easily cheat their way into changing the color of D.Va's face so they can have an alternate normal pin-up version, that spells copout to me.

The direction of said pics tends to vary. A lot of fans wanna see this character and that character Masked, so admittedly it's been a numbers game and building a better mousetrap. I don't mind that most of the time, most of the art is commissions and the cost of having a scene is a bit more costly than a pin-up and frankly just the idea of getting a Mask design drawn as more than just a green face is meticulous in on itself depending on the artist.

Personally speaking, I'm not even into transformation. Like...at all. I've been aware of transformation as a fetish before getting Mask stuff up on dA but first and foremost, I always had a fetish for masks in general so that mostly transferred over, but also the part of it being an artifact of power was the draw for me. That isn't to say I don't enjoy transformations where applicable but if we went all this time without so much as one sequence I probably wouldn't be bothered to care.

I like stories like Nomax's comic for instance and abbieSS' story had potential too. I also can't wait to see that fanfilm being worked and hyped up. I enjoy why some of the people who commission Mask stuff do what they do. Shit's hardly a "community" though, it's more of a "trust" where content gets added in good faith over time, sometimes the benefit of individuals and crossovers have been carrying most of the work.

Not saying there's no room for original content, just that characters with brand/fan recognition have been on the forefront for quite some time and I don't see it stopping or getting downplayed.

Still have a place in my heart for Mask stuff but I'm just more focused on mask fetishism in general lately rather than one particular Mask.

Interesting perspective. If I'm understanding you right I agree that having established characters wearing the mask doesn't necessarily mean a lack of quality, at least in the purely aesthetic sense. Personally, I don't see any real appeal in seeing established characters wearing the mask, because there doesn't seem to be much to it besides the surface level "this character is wearing the mask! Oh no! What hi-jinks are they going to get into now!"

With original characters, you can get into their heads without worrying about canon or established character consistency. There's a psychological aspect to The Mask that, to me at least, is half the fun.

Still, as you say, existing character + mask is what people want and pay for, but at least in my experience you don't see that domination as much in other fetishes. Maybe that's just a bi-product of it being born from an existing franchise in the first place.

It's a weird fetish, that's for sure, especially since its appeal seems to come from a convergence of a bunch of different fetishes. Hard to have a "community" when everyone seems to be in it for different reasons.

Well when your budget's limited to depicting a character in one moment, pin-ups are the practical thing to do. Especially when one artist is available once a month and the other artist is fairly available but again it's easier to have 5 pics of different wearers than one whole sequence or comic of how the wearer uses their power.

No, pointing out flaws about a fetish is valid. It's not like this is the only fetish that has shortcomings. It's where the line is drawn in the sand. My problem lies with art direction, save for a few pics I hold in high esteem or use for reference material. It doesn't matter if it's what it'd look like in the comics but if it looks like someone's wearing a mask or exaggerates some features, at least there's a noticeable change.

It's understandable that said characters aren't behaving or in situations where they cause mischief or act in a way that's contrary to their nature or doing so in extremes.

Everyone in it has their own reasons to be in it and might have their disappointments for what they'd like to see but in the end, the people having content made are mostly doing so out of self interest. They're not meant to be Robin Hoods and really anyone not satisfied with what's being put out there should really practice self advocacy instead of holding out for a hero that's just going to lead to frustration.

A beautiful body with a scary/ugly face might appear in some pics and sometimes it'll be a cartoonish face. Green is still a part of it because it's based on the Dark Horse property, be it cartoon or comic. If it's not your thing, advocate for a fork of said fetish or just come up with something altogether.

Nothing's stopping you from a direction you might prefer. I personally encourage it, even thought I might not always endorse said direction. That's what makes the shit malleable.

Why would you let invisible barriers get in the way of what makes you happy? Or are you simply looking for excuses to be miserable about the fetish and justifying your derision towards it?

First off, the guy who posted that isn't the guy who said most of that stuff in your comment.

Second, most of the shit is commissions more than their own drawings. Some of the artists that do draw She-Masks on their own are more like hobbyists with their own lives than full time professional illustrators.

Shit adds up in cost when you have other things you wanna see and drawing just one figure right can be tedious.

Not really an obligation on the commissoner or artist's part nor is it a valid argument. This is your problem when the people making things happen don't share your taste. So if you want traps, furries, hyper-muscle, scat, farts, inflation, weight gain and the like, you're more than welcome to make it happen rather than hold out for a saviour to make it happen for you.

Masks in are already a fetish and some attach other things of focus on them like transformation or what have you. Commissioners are fueled by self interest and when it comes to getting the next wearer out so it comes with the territory.

Yeah, but it was also stated that simply painting the face green feels cheap and underwhelming. Especially when compared to characters that had a more pronounced Mask look.

It's also by principle I don't like that because I always made it a point designing a She-Mask should be more than a palette swapped face because I've seen it get written off as such from the outside looking in.

More to the point, I'm just fine with keeping the body recognizable more than the face. Mask fetishism plays on that dynamic for me personally on a base level of things. Plus that's usually a secondary effect.
