The game started on the Legend Of Krystal forums using Playshapes graphics as placeholders. The guy in charge was the same as most adult game devs; an amateur doing this for fun. Professional artists have two tiers of pricing. The kind they require companies to pay and the kind they require normal people to pay.

For actual professional artists that take porn commissions (and these are rare as rok's teeth) $80-100+ is actually pretty typical. However for commercial projects the same artists will charge $200-300 for the same work. That is the difference between doing things professionally and privately. It's the same sort of rates they're paid when working on actual video games, movies, and so on.

The benefits being that professional artists aren't going to bail on you with all your art assets. Say what you will about anyone else on that project; Vanilly was a professional.

Overwhored was never really a commercial project. At best Patreon helped me break even on the money I put into it and didn't come anywhere close to paying for the five years of my life I spent making it. Moreover it was released for free. As a result it never had that much money and artists were willing to work for less. I just had to hire a lot of people to make up for some ending up as inevitable failures or flakes.

Snow Daze is a fully commercial project in spite of being released for free and still runs like my earlier stuff does but has the weight of some actual money behind it so I can afford to hire more professional artists. In the future (that is after tax season) I'll probably transition over to having more cohesive contracts written up by a law firm and possibly taking on a few as part-time employees. The main reason I can't afford to do more is that the Patreon's annual profit is less than what most professional artists on commercial products make a year. There simply isn't enough money for full time employees. Mind you if I made Breeding Season's money I could probably put out a "Snow Daze" sized game every three or four months. And I don't mean a chapter, I mean the whole damn game.

If you do take on employees annual pay just comes down to individual negotiation sessions, same as almost any business.

Shwig claims HP was an incompetent fuck who never gave any direction to BS. HP claims Shwig never cared to deliver or work on proper schedules. Who's in the right here? It is a mystery.
Personally, I think this is a huge, elaborate ruse. They both decided that they were in over their heads with the amount of animations and content BS would have (check some wiki for the animations table, we're talking about hundreds of variations here) and the amount of time it took to make them. So they struck a deal, pretended to be assholes so nobody would know who to blame, while they get away with their scam of a project with Patreon jewbucks.

Make sure you have a contract that gives you images rights. Thats the most important thing, instead of thinking an amount a month. Figure out all the artwork you need, or a segment of it. Say I need 6 characters, and 4 portraits. Go through tumblr or ask around, and get a handful of estimates.

Avoid beginners, not just novice artist, begginers to commissions. See how many commissions they done, and how often they post work.

Real professionals, know their worth, they're not begging for commissions, and they get gigs from real company.

Find a decent amatuer / semi pro. The more you have to look, the less popular they are, the cheaper value.

Finally, use those estimates and compare them with their art. If your a nonartist that can't between polished turds and solid foundations ask friends what they think of who.

Incorporation is a necessity for legal indemnification wrt financial liability, not proof you're a big boy in big-boy pants. Software typically comes with a EULA that already provides that protection, and if your distribution chain has no physical component, you've cut out one of the larger reasons to need to incorporate.

The other edge of the sword here is that when you only sporadically produce product which can and will be easily pirated, you will never attain a revenue stream secure enough to merit leaving the per-project model.

Without DRM or other SaaS model to protect you, you're far better off paying people based on their work, not to convince them not to work with/for other people.

As far as my earlier comment about not licensing Unity is concerned, one of their devs claims once they get closer to release they'll go ahead with that, and quite honestly I'd do exactly the same thing in their position. They're looking at paying $35/$125 per month subscription depending on their expected annual revenue (and if Unity takes the income from BS into account, they may get kicked into the higher tier automatically). There are no meaningful feature differences between Plus and Pro for games without MMO or cloud services, but Unity's hardassed about how much money you bring in.

I've been offering my art for free because I'm doing this for fun. If I was charging my actual freelance rate that I charge professionally, I doubt most of these groups could afford it. the flipside of that I'm not giving any of the projects exclusive rights to the art.

If you're talking actual professional illustration, all sorts of other factors come in, such as usage rights (client wants to use it for print, digital, own the art rights flat out drive the price up as well), number of revisions, etc.

I, and most of my friends, come up with estimates based on an hourly rate we consider fair and how long we think the project will take. An illustrator just coming out of school is considered to be lowballing themselves if they're charging $35 per hour.

Projects like comic books are unique since they pay shit for the amount of work you have to do and you have to do be insanely productive to make a living wage solely off comic work. But people are willing to do it for love of the medium or property or the hopes that sweatshopping away will lead to getting creator owned property sometime in the future.

It's competent to provide DRMed instant-response streaming video in a way even modifications of HTTP can't match. As long as it's talking to an RTSP-based streaming server, you can be halfway around the world and as soon as you let go of the scrubber you get playback at that point regardless of length or bandwidth. You have put this perfectly. American cape books and Archie are strictly work-for-hire, with no further publisher obligation beyond residuals from reprints. But what I can actually say about SS for sure is that mechanically it's just really simple and smooth. In a lot of games that feature here on /weg/, you're left wondering "what the fuck am I suppose to be doing right now?"

SS isn't like that; it's bright and straightforward. Quests are logical and don't take all that much grinding. The UI is also very clean, and getting better.

SS will never be to everyone's taste art wise, but I think the vast majority people could agree as far as the actual gameplay goes, it's anything but a chore and that's a really nice quality to it.

And for that reason, I think SS is a pretty good game.
