Why don't we see any competent western devs make eroge of the same quality as japanese ones?
The market is there, it's starved and desperate as fuck to the point it will accept such low-tier garbage.

Two big reasons.

One, there is a lot less of an open market for such things, and so it attracts far less people. If someone in the west needs to scrounge around through anonymous imageboards to sell their game while someone in Japan just throws it up on DLSite, then of course Japan is going to see more talent willing to do that. Having some companies who can devote themselves towards such projects without getting protested or firebombed is good, as well.

Two, Japan has a massive amount of shit product as well. You probably don't notice because you just visit /vg/ and download only the english-translated ones (which are going to be the good ones, because who wastes their time translating a shit game?) but there are a massive number of garbage Japanese porn games out there. Even something like Princess Sacrifice doesn't seem that unusual compared to, perhaps, Malice in the Machine.

You can remove the porn, sell the game on Steam and re-add the porn with a patch.
Many are doing it already, but it's mostly shitty VNs, no real games.
Literal garbage like Hunpiepop blew even the high pofile games sold in japan out of the water in terms of sale numbers.
Large Patreon scams are highly succesful due to hunger for such type of games.

Selling to the NA market means dealing with NA laws and such. Most of these developers on DLSite and similar places are only individuals, not massive companies with legal teams and translation teams. They barely understand what is going on outside Japan, much less understand all they'd need to do to release a game in someplace like the E.U.

It's little wonder that they stick with Japan sales. Heck, the way some media treats them, it's little wonder they want as little to do with the west as they can.
