Ideologically speaking both the Nazis and the Marxists were relativists. Marxists propounded a social subjectivism in terms of competing economic classes, Nazis just substituted race for class. It's fueled by blind resentment, spite, and an unwillingness to take responsibility for one's own suffering either way.

Socialism, on the other hand, applies to a wide range of economic and social systems. The Nazis sought to convince Germans as a whole to subordinate their personal interests to the "common good" so the economy could be organized to benefit society as a whole, for example. That Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union arrived at similar endpoints despite being at each other's throats is not coincidental, it is simply the consistent nature of collectivism.

When you talk about "communism," I suppose you mean "Marxism-Leninism" since you're describing the Soviet Union. In this case, I can see what you mean. Strictly speaking in Marxist thought socialism is the transitional establishment between the overthrow of capitalism and the "realization" of "true" communism, but that particular delusion has never come to fruition anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Even if you were to argue it was primarily a branding ploy, the Nazis labeling themselves socialist was not any less technically correct than the Soviet Union naming themselves likewise, in that sense.
