Ghibli films have fantastic visuals, prior to Mononoke they were completely hand-drawn and animated. Everything is on-model, the environments are detailed, and Miyazaki taps into visual motifs from across cultures and history.

The stories are also almost completely filler. It's funny that plebs shit on slice of life stuff like eating, cleaning, taking baths or going to the bus stop as "filler" in TV anime but it's the main attraction for many Ghibli films. Add that with a sense of magic or supernatural surrealism and you get the immersive quality of his films.

Ghibli is far from "Japanese Disney" (that's Toei), but Miyazaki himself really is about as close to Walt as anyone else has come.

It really doesn't. Scenes that don't directly advance the plot are there simply to focus on the characters being themselves. Only in the autism area, where everyone is classically conditioned to have ADD, are scenes like this derided as filler.

In Totoro and Kiki's case, there isn't much of a plot to advance. And that's what's great about them.

They sanitized Quasimodo, Esmerelda and Phoebus but made Frollo more evil than any other villain before and after. Hugo's novel was not a good/evil story, but that's what Disney sought to make, since all movies in that decade had simple morality tales at their core.

Hunchback is probably the 3rd best Disney film of that era, behind Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and ahead of Aladdin. But it had the potential to be the best animated film of all time, which isn't a fair standard to judge what we actually got.

Ghibli is seriously overrated and way past its prime. All the newer films are basically typical Disney flicks, with high production value but little to no real substance.

There's a couple of older good ones, but sadly they are no longer capable of producing high quality anime. Doesn't help that Miyazaki is basically a bitter old man today and goes around shitting on other people rather than come up with anything decent himself.
