It would have been far more interesting watching Slaine struggle between Earth attacking and Mars betraying all while trying to protect his princess, and then get her to achieve peace by some method that involved her love for both worlds and not just marrying some dude.

In fact, sadly one of the few good things coming out of the series is the amount of fan made story replacements for the shitty second season. I really liked the image showing Lemrina rescuing Slaine from prison with an exosuit and the assistant. Far better ending than Inaho just visiting.

Show had a great beginning and felt high stakes-- however, a series of Robot Of The Week fights followed by a fake mid-season climax where multiple characters were literally shot in the head only for there to be no consequences-- that fucking ruined the show. You cannot create the illusion that everyone is fair game only to shatter it with clear evidence that nothing is ever going to happen.

It is the most wasted potential in the last few years.

It's pretty obvious it was a very committee driven anime, especially with stuff like Rayet taking the spotlight from Marito in that one episode because a producer wanted it, so I'm not surprised he wouldn't want to work with such people. Still, he never said it officially and only had nice words for Aoki and the others in interviews.

It would've been a 10/10 if Slaine were a girl instead. Asshime gets written out completely or actually killed by assassins. Instead Inaho isn't a completely emotionless robot, just an actual autist who has trouble expressing affection. He and Slaine become friends during the war after getting stranded on an island or some shit. They grow affections for each other but Slaine feels the duty to reform the empire from the inside to honor her best friend asshime's last wish. That honestly would've made the show more watchable at least.
