Nuclear pulse rockets may not be a good idea, however, nuclear thermal rocket would probably be the best to use for interplanetary missions due to it's high specific impulse (less travel time) and cheaper cost (compared to chemical). Radiation is an issue, though, I'd imagine that chemical propellants can be used for lift off and when the payload is jettisoned into orbit.

>>162245378
Reusable rockets are a joke.
The amount of money they pour into this would be better spent making launch loops or mass drivers.
Far more efficient can cost less money in the long run.

Take your bara shit back to /y/.

It's even got a pointy nose :^)
>>
>>162254099
there are 10 engines on the thing
you get 9 back for free (not actually counting the rest of the thing, avionics, tankage and shit)
the madman wants to bring the last one back too
is actively trying to get the fucking fairing back too
bear in mind engines are by far the most expensive shits on the rocket and the fuel costs literally nothing
compare the RnD and construction costs on erecting a launch loop versus the stunt he pulled in 5-6 years with paypal money and whatever he got from NASA for his CRS contracts
>>
>>162254292
Still, the cost per kg for getting stuff up into space on a rocket is insane, even for reusable ones.
If we want to become a spacefaring race we need to stop obsessing over rockets and focus on more efficient launch methods.
>>
>>162254099
No that's fucking stupid. First off all you want to go for the low hanging fruit and not invest hundreds of billions in some untested meme technology.
Most of the technologies that went into landing boosters already existed, it didn't require an impossibly huge budget to create them and he alreay had a succeful business launching rockets without it providing income.

Second, they're are a bit of a problem since we have a fucking atmosphere, the exit point would need to be impossibly high.
This would be useful on the moon and other bodies without atmsopheres.

>cost less money in the long run.
Doubtful. The maintenance cost of such a big installation would be huge. You should take the time to look up some figures on the LHC.
>>
>>162243110
this is a blue board
>>
>>162254404
the rocket engine is one of the most efficient means of turning energy into motion, the whole fuckin point of it is to accelerate mass
as it stands right now the technology exists to provide cheap service to LEO with minimal turn around time, all it takes is a company like spacex rocking the market a little to speed things up
and in all likelyhood the payload of an earth based launch loop/mass driver/giant fucking cannon is going to be another, smaller rocket because you still need a perigee maneuvre to enter orbit
if there's another solution that's better than the carrier rocket it will come in time, right now the rocket is the shit and it's not going anywhere
>>
>>162254657
an apogee manuevre* but whatever
humanity is gonna leave earth on rockets, they're probably gonna look different is all
>>
>>162254520
All the technology for launch loops also exists. Mass drivers would some stuff that we don't currently have but its nowhere near the level of shit we would need to make for a space elevator.

Fair enough.
All I'm saying is that I believe someone like Musk should be devoting his time to something bigger than reusable rockets. Its just a waste of talent in my opinion.

>nowhere near the level of shit we would need to make for a space elevator
It might as well be. Like I said, the exist point of a mass driver would need to be impossibly high, even if you we're to construct it on a high mountain.
And the thought of having to maintain such a large installation on such a high altitude.

It will never be cheaper than resuable rockets.

Reminder that if you like space things and hard SF gets you just as hard you need to read 2001 Nights if you haven't already.

he is, actually
motherfucker's got projects in all areas of science, including one involving vacuumed underground tubes for high speed transit, if he's still around and his company is still afloat when mass drivers start being considered he'll pull the RnD he needs out of it
>>
>>162254881
I know he's started dabbling in other fields but he's started working on fucking hyperloops?
And here I thought we wouldn't get one of those till the 2060's.

If it's a meme, Musk is probably working on it.

He's already got the foundations in the works, it really won't be long now.

Building the lines for this is going to be a pain in the ass, but well worth it.
All we need now is an orbital ring and we could around the planet in 2 hours.

Eris is bigger than Pluto, but Pluto has more mass. Eris is just a fatass, Pluto is true /fit/.

Despite being one of the harder planets to terraform, Venus is the only planet that would end up being "Earthlike."
Forget terraforming mars, thats just a waste of time and resources. Terraforming Venus is a far better investment.
>>
>>162256980
Good luck getting rid of all that excess gas in the atmosphere.
>>
>>162257226
No problem. We just build giant mirrors in orbit to reflect 100% of the light the planet would otherwise receive. Eventually the atmosphere will freeze and then we can just mine it all out. Since each gas freezes at a different temperature they will form layers which will make it easy to sort them out and then we can add them back in at the desired ratios and remove the mirrors to allow the planet to heat back up again.

Easy peasy.
>>
>>162257226
Liquidize it then ship it off planet, duh.
That's why I said it's one of the harder planets to terraform, that atmosphere's a bitch.

don't you realize that at the surface, Venus's atmosphere is a super critical fluid.
>>
>>162259737
You just need to place some laser satellites around her, then focus on a single spot with them. You'll know it's working when a hole starts to form. If not, you don't have enough lasers.
