I don't watch much shonen/manime stuff but it's enjoyable, and avoids a lot of common shonen problems. All Might > any DC/Marvel hero.

Just watch the first 2 episodes. If you like it overall but think it needs more actions, watch episode 3 and 4 too. The first four episodes are one arc that basically form Deku's origin story. It doesn't turn shounen tropes on their head, it reconstructs them.

It's a cool anime about a well-written Paragon-type character being a Paragon and inspiring other heroes. It's got some neat, sometimes unique and sometimes just well-done powers. It has good animation that's fun to watch, with a relatively low amount of QUALITY jumping out at you if you're not actively looking for it. Character relationships are relatively standard for shounen, without any major steps into dangerous territory, but are reasonably well done and not painful to watch.

All in all, I'd point to this as an example of why one doesn't have to reject tropes to write a good show. It's a qunitessential reconstruction of the Shounen Genre that's worth looking at if you've ever watched Dragonball, Naruto, or One Piece and thought "I'd like that, if only it wasn't so obviously for kids."

I have to say it is astonishing to see how under utilized the female characters are in the manga and how they are swept aside for the male characters. We have spent a significant amount of time with Deku, Bakugo, Iida, Todoroki, but when it comes to Uraraka almost nothing has been done with her. Asui's popularity has warranted her to get her own filler episode and extra chapter. But nothing is really done with her in the manga.

Now in the current arc the one female member of the big three and her squad of girls have been side lined again. Whereas the male characters got a lot of spot light and back story.

It is really odd considering the female characters are not obnoxious and many of them appear fairly competent. Does Hori just not know how to write a plot that involves the many great female characters he has created? I am not some sjw, but it is just starting to become more apparent as time goes on.

Season 2 has really come into its own, and it has one of the better tournament arcs I've seen (not YuYu-tier, but leagues better than Naruto et al). Nah I'm a different anon. I would probably have used the term "properly executed shonen." It hits all the right tones in the right way, without any of the retardation that makes shonen used or tired. It is not a heartless series that exists solely to present fights in s successive order to get the attention of low-IQ teenagers. the character are well-written and the fights and conflicts reflect both on their characters and on the core theme of the show, which is relentless the pursuit of one's goals, sportsmanship, the idea what it means to be a hero not simply as the defeater of so-called "evil" forces, but as a pillar of society that those in dire situations can rely on both emotionally and physically. In during the license exam they actually get "professional victims" as examiner that rate not only their powers but their behavior as they rescue them, similarly to how professionals in the real world get their filed training.

It is a surprisingly endearing and well-written show with a very lovable main cast, and you should watch/read if you have the time and the proper mood for it.

I actually thought this was pretty bad for a long time. I read the first couple of chapters when it was starting to get some buzz around here. The first chapter seemed generic, but I thought it was going to be fun to see MC batman his way to the top. Then he got AM's power and I lost what little interest I had.

Then I forced myself to read it once more and I was surprised by how interesting the setting, plot and characters ended up being. It's no masterpiece, but it's certainly quite good for being a shounen battle manga.
