With manga I wanted some slower pacing, the show went far too slow.
They probaly had to because they had to chose a point of story where they are going to stop, and it had to be either too slow, too fast, or abruptly cut in the middle of an arc.

Slow would have been the entire 1st season based on riko, reg and the other red whistles training in 1st layer learning to become better delvers, only receiving the note from lyza as a cliffhanger for season 2. Following that the layers of the abyss would be for more detailed and take at least half a season to finish one.

This show is fast paced as shit, it's barely episode 3 and the big adventure whole premise has already begun. There is no prepping, training anything like that they just hop right fucking in. The levels of the abyss literally take like an episode or 2, and if it follows the manga they will be halfway through area 5 by the end of S1. You must have absolutely no attention span if you consider something like that fast,

Then with the second, we got a forest, an inverted one too.
Third was just a giant pitfall
Fourth is an eerily humid and foggy shrooms place
Fifth is just a vast expanse of water
Sixth is a broken and ruined city
I'm going to guess the seventh is a fleshy area,. Unlike the sixth layer which had bits and pieces revealed about it the only thing known about this place is a "ring". Maelstrom is often used to describe a storm, or a state of extreme confused movement. It might be a layer of flesh, those little stringy things are tendons and connective tissue and the walls, the floor, everything pulsates and moves.
It could also be a layer of great tempest and storms, hence the word "maelstrom" describing it. The ring could just be violent lightning constantly being produced.
My last (and most unbelievable yet "believable in figurative terms" theory) is that it's literally hell, with fire, lava and carnage.

I loved the last episode. I read the manga after watching each episode up until I catch up with the show. The previous episode was great to amplify the experience with the last episode. After passing in Ozen's training/test, they gained a lot of confidence and even more after both Riko and Reg proved they can challenge the Abyss by themselves in the 3rd layer. Reg has the Incinerator, Riko was able to survive in the 3rd layer while looking up for food while Reg was resting and together they took out a dangerous creature with Blaze Reap. All of that to their overconfidence be shattered when they arrive at the 4th layer. The reality shock wouldn't be so brutal if their overconfidence wasn't so well built as they did.

After reading this thread, I can kinda empathize with people saying that the pace is slow. I felt like I agreed with the sentiment, but I went back through the episodes to see which ones deserved the time spent.

Most of them had good pacing, but a couple of them just felt boring and forgettable. For the most part, I think the feeling of "bad pacing" just comes from the lack of memorable moments (not necessarily anything "exciting" moments for those screaming ADHD) and the knowledge that this is going to be 13 episodes. Also, the tease of Nanachi in the ED makes it feel worse considering she shows up in episode 10.

So I think the material is getting the pacing it deserves, but the show will not be satisfying on its own.

It doesn't have to be "let's go straight up to episode 10", but at least let the two protags experience the Abyss by themselves, and have them figure out things without the help from other characters. Create an actual sense of escalation with the monsters and more "pure adventure" stuff like episode 10: start off relatively hard but still manageable, have Riko and Reg grow much closer to each other than what we have now through the various hardships. Also, perhaps include a small breather in a safe area, where there's no Curse nor monsters, before descending into the real darkness with no hope of return.
Damn, just thinking about it, this anime could have been so much more interesting. Instead, all we got is overreliance on exposition, and slow pacing.
