The FPA was democracy at its shittiest at the time, so there were plenty of discontents in the country, including in the military.
Lynch was sent back to the FPA, with finely crafted plan in hand, in order to incite the military into overthrowing the government.
It's not implausible for a coup to happen that easily with some outside help, the cold war was full of them.

Been watching anime for 10 years now and I can honestly say that Anno is a hack and that his mental conditions affected his directing too much. His fans can defend his shit directing all day, but with the rebuilds, he's just milking the franchise towards otaku who have no concern for proper storytelling and narrative. It was one of the worst animes I've ever seen.

It's honestly not that good, and is only praised for being relatively unique in the realm of anime.

The dialogue is hammy, the pacing is all over the place, the art and music is derivative and unimaginative in the context of a space opera, and worst of all, the space battles are nonsensical and poorly devised.

It's worth watching for the story and the interesting characters, but don't go in expecting any sort of masterpiece. Anime fans only hold this in such high regard because they have so little experience with any other medium and can't seem to understand that anime isn't supposed to replicate a live action show.

It's ambitious, but it's not that good. It's notable but ultimately a shoddy replica of other mediums.
