Since when is anime for children? American cartoons are for children; anime with it's darker stories and more realistic, fleshed-out characters is done by adults, for adults.
Just watch Dragon Ball Z or Death Note. A kid wouldn't be able to understand the plot, the characters or even the sophisticated art style (compared to american cartoons.)
