Not idealized. He wasn't a hero nor particularly good-natured, life gave him a shitty hand and he answered by being abrasive and hot-headed. What would've been a sterotypical shonen rivalry nowadays got hit with a dose of reality (which I guess you could say about the series as a whole) and his relationship with Rikiishi was deep and nuanced. He doesn't get easy outs whenever shit goes down either in a match or in his personal life and he's forced to deal with the consequences and grow from it. All of this wouldn't have been possible without a similarly realistic supporting cast and the writing in general.
