I'd choose Karna. He's completely loyal to a fault. He'll obey any command and even kill himself if told to without needing a Command Seal. Plus he's almost as overpowered as Gil. There are servants that could possibly defeat Gil anyway (as long as he didn't use Ea), so even if he was summoned, it's not an automatic win for his master since 99% of the time he's too smug to pull out Ea.
Enkidu, Merlin (if he can even be summoned), Karna, Arjuna, Ozymandias, Achilles, spooky Hassan (just send him kill the master, he's undetectable), and Heracles come to mind.

There are ways to do that without tearing your body apart. You could always have him suck the life force out of the civilians in town. If you're fighting in a big city there are literally millions of people you can drain the life out of to feed Karna. And because Karna is absolutely loyal to his master he'll do it without complaint. I wager if you kill off an entire city's population you can sustain Karna long enough for him to win the war for you. Then have him commit suicide via Command Seal if need be. Then the Grail is yours. As long as Gil is not in the war, Karna's victory is pretty much assured. Because like I said earlier, unlike Gil, he is not arrogant. That means he will take Saber and Shirou seriously and go all out to kill them as soon as he can.

He's not as easy to put down as you'd assume; remember that even Lancelot, the only Servant besides Saber to ever score a flat-out win against him, wasn't even able to put a scratch on him, just inflict some fall damage. The only two on that list I'd say have a 50/50 shot against Gilgamesh are Enkidu and Karna. The others are basically praying for him to fuck up on a level we've never seen him do fighting another servant, and Arjuna, the third-best chance at beating him, probably wouldn't ever even get a shot considering he fills the same class slot.

Nasu is big on setting up impossible circumstances and then showing ways that those impossible circumstances can come about. When Gilgamesh is called the strongest, it's said in earnest; it's supposed to make it more impactful that Saber and Shirou actually manage to kill him, and more shocking that the Shadow is able to devour him.

I thin Fate/Stay Night is mostly not that good. Despite being ridiculously large, the only characters that stood out were Shirou, and by extension Archer, Saber and Kirei. The rest weren't good enough. Shirou's autism and trauma were entertaining. He grew on me really fast, even though I hated him in the 2006 anime. Archer's personality and dialogue was entertaining, and so was his gimmick of being Shirou. Saber's past and the circumstances surrounding her were interesting, and her personality was cute. Kirei was all of that combined. But the rest just weren't anything special. Even my current favorite Nasuverse character, Gilgamesh, just okay at best in Fate/Stay Night. Even Cu, who was entertaining as fuck, wouldn't be missed by me even if you took him out.

I think those four characters are the core and all that makes Fate/Stay Night worth reading. The rest aren't good enough to stand out.

This purely depends on intelligence, this isn't military tactics or something with 3000 years of written stuff about it. Nobody enters the grail war with an education in grail war tactics and strategy. A smart enough person can do just fine.

This is a big issue, which precludes a lot of servants that wouldn't be ok with killing civilians. As long as the civilian mana keeps flowing, however, it could be done.

Bigger issue is not having a good catalyst. If you end up with fucking Gilgamesh you don't really have to care about anything but making him like you so that he doesn't feel you are too worthless to touch the grail, he'll handle the rest. Issue is, unless you got some serious contacts good luck getting your hands on something like the skin of the first snake. If you end up with some fifth rate servant, then you really are fucked if you have no combat capabilities.

Europe is full of guns, especially countries like Sweden. Getting your hands on one wouldn't be hard at all. No idea about Japan, but I'm sure that if you're ok with killing civilians to upkeep your servant, you're fine with going the shady route of getting a gun. I mean, you can just tell your servant to go into that Yakuza den and kill them all, then you can get the guns.

Yes, but if I recall correctly the catalyst helps you summon stronger stuff without pouring in impossible amounts of mana. If you were compatible with Gilgamesh and didn't have a catalyst, you'd still not be able to summon him. So without a catalyst you'd get a weaker compatible servant.

As long as you have even a shred of understanding of the situation, you'd be fine. Tokiomi was just a terrible judge of character, he forced a king to retreat against his will when his authority was being directly challenged, any ruler in history would have killed for that. Realistically, it would be a lot easier to deal with Gilgamesh than Saber, if you're in a fucking grail war adhering to her moralfag ideals would be extremely difficult, a real grail war wouldn't have the plot helping you, you'd almost surely end up in a dire situation at least once where it's between surviving or losing all respect Saber has for you.

Goetia required not just Solomon ars nova and removing the temple and the Solomon authority bullshit, but that you had at your hand the amount of Servants as "many as Stars in the sky" (so the ones you bond, you fought and the friends they brought off-pannel) to kill the pillars to weaken his other power and they needed to be buffed with the powers of bond to not fall apart (which they immediately did after they pulled this off, they collapsed and lost their materialization before Jeanne could thank them).
This was possible because Goetia basically ignored you for nearly two years and ignored the Servants. Had he gone to fight before Roman arrival, it was a dead end for all.

It also required Mashu's shield protection and sacrifice.

If you summoned someone like Karna, who cares, the only servant you'd have to worry about it Gilgamesh and the overseer's orders don't really sway him in either way. If you were the one summoning Gilgamesh, then all of them ganging up on you is perfect because it might make him get off his lazy ass and pull out Ea since he gets to look cool in front of everyone.

The problem with Vlad in Berserker is that he has the blood aura on permanently, thus sucking the life force out of everything around him. Its not that being evil would stop it, just that Aura will kill everything thats around him.

the point is someone would interfere before you even got close to absorbing the souls of 1/10th the people of the city so karna wouldnt be able to fight at full power. In any case, if the servants gang up on karna/you they could just target his master(you) and its over.

I would use the Grail to become a Servant myself just so that when I get summoned the Grail War will end prematurely by me exposing magic to the public. For the War in particular I would summon Gawain and try to plan out my battles for Numeral to remain active. Though even without Numeral Gawain should at least be better than Shirou Saber so I would say my chances would at least be decent.

You cant just wosh youself into a servant that easy. Itnis possible to be induced into the throne of heroes like archer did you you have to do some amazing shit to be considered. The grail can certainly help you do it, if you know exactly what you need to do. Otherwise it's just a waste of a wish
