First, the characters. Yuuma in particular is a whiny little unbearable shit. There's also the matter of interpersonal relationships. In the original most people were charmed by the neatly defined, straight-forward relationships that the series developed. Try eschews this in favor of something more akin to tired and annoying harem hijinks.

And finally, most importantly, the fights.
The kind of suck in general. First there's the "Tri" gimmick of the series, with fights primarily being in teams of three. Nothing interesting comes of this as far as team dynamics or tactics, with all the best fights pretty much having to go out of their way to force 1v1 scenarios. Beyond that, all the fights come down to overblown super robot spectacle as opposed to the more diverse presentation of the battles in the original Build Fighters. The only remotely tactical fight was Crossbone Full Cloth vs. Celestial Being OCs, and even that was ultimately overshadowed by particle-superpower BS, and otherwise bogged down by attempting to inject some convoluted resource management system into the fight where none existed anywhere else in either show.

That OVA was shit. I haven't been more disappointed in years. The action was crap, absolutely nothing special. It didn't do anything for the characters. The emotion was nearly null. I had the feeling they wouldn't exclude Reiji but when he didn't appear after the halfway point, I was hoping we would see Sei's development on his own and how much he progressed by himself instead of relying on Reiji. Cheats or not, that cheap deus ex machina made me think Sei can't do anything without Reiji. There were no surprises too. Did they think for a second that it wasn't blatantly obvious what happened to BS Cosmos? Speaking of Cosmos, it's showing was nearly nothing. Even the final battle there was underwhelming and if I had known this OVA would be this disappointing, I'd just pretend everyone died offscreen. After watching this OVA, I had to rewatch some of S1's far superior fights like BS Full Package vs Zaku Amazing who easily eclipsed this OVA in fight choreography and action and is far superior even if someone magically removed the emotional weight S1 had. It rides off S1 and that's it.

The Build Strike Cosmos had a bad showing because it isn't on Sei's hands. The finale of the OAV makes it very clear that Sei is now on Reiji's level, the only reason why they needed him in the first place is the arista.

Again, it was lackluster, but most of the stuff you're ragging on are non-issues; the biggest issue that OVA had is the fact that there should've been a season 2 dealing with Sei and his career without Reiji, S2 would've made the OVA earn that moment where Reiji returns.

That's bullshit. The final Sei vs Reiji was pretty crap. It's like if someone decided to play GBF's soundtrack over a weak fight. Episode 6's Reiji vs Yuki took less than half the episode and was about five minutes compared to the thirty minutes of the whole OVA and the two or three minutes where Sei and Reiji fought. It gave both a better showing despite that. They introduced new things like Cosmos having a new absorb shield that covers the whole body yet that was used only once. Just the writers deciding to write things so it would be in a situation to have such a bad showing is a flaw.

I'm thinking your defence doesn't work. This 30 minutes and the time put into it could have been produced something on par with some of Build Fighter's best episodes. In the end, it's not even close to Build Fighters.
