Conflict is a foundation of fiction. It spurs the story on, having some thing happening on screen to spur everything on.

Anime a lot of the time has a focus on wish-fulfillment main characters, so we follow the super cool guy who has the one opponent and they fight to determine the victor. This got mixed in with the lexicon of the rest of medium, one-on-one conflicts are so common it's beyond the point of cliche.

In western media you mainly have army plots, or the rag-tag group of heroes wherein everyone contributes a separate part to the final confrontation, but conflict is still there as a fundamental aspect.

There's plenty of media where this doesn't happen, but anime has it much stronger than others because of the meta-boom, even cute girls doing cute things have to fulfill the standard archetypes and roles given to them.

This. There are 8 billion people on the planet. There is always some autistic chink out there better than you at your specialty.

I was always the best at everything during school...but there would be some other school with some other kid better than me. Maybe I got 104 as a grade in math (extra credit mofos). There'd be someone who got 105 in some other district in some other state. Maybe I was the best at solving logical puzzles. There would be someone somewhere better. If I beat everyone in tennis in gym, there'd be some rich kid who had personal tennis trainers since age 2 out there better than me.

There's a diminishing marginal return where effort to gain the next rank in activity x increases exponentially, and the additional comfiness and smugness gained becomes less and less. As long as you're better than those immediately around you at most things, that's the peak tradeoff of effort to improve versus social status return on investment. I don't want to compete with Chang NEET in shanghai. As long as I'm acknowledged as better than those in my community and immediate peer group, that's satisfactory.

I'd rather have comfy exploration/adventure/atmospheric anime than battle shounen #5028, muh rank autism.
