Just because it qualifies to be nominated doesn't mean jack shit. See Your Name last year.
>>
>>161747584
Your Name didn't qualify because Funi didn't put it in theaters until this year.
>>
>>161747728
Are you certain that rule applies to animation? I was under the impression that it wasn't.
>>
>>161747728
it did qualify, but it didn't make it past the first round of nominations.

They did a limited screening in one city just to be able to qualify it last year. They tried, but they failed.

Corner was qualified? Can't say I'm not happy. It was a great movie, though we all know some Pixar feature will be taking the Oscar anyways. At this point a mere nomination is already way past expectation for an anime in a Western award show.
>>

There you go.

The Oscars are meant to be watched like an episode of Mystery Science Theater. It's basically the biggest unintentional comedy show off the year.
>>
>>161747432
The Oscars are the last group to ever listen to about animated films. One of the judges said they let their kid pick their vote because they hadn't actually seen any animated films that year
>>

That does sound a lot like the oscars.

no they didn't even nominate the first lego movie when it was up.
>>
>>161748354
This.

Foreign media stand no chance against american movies. Precisely because the chances of winning are directly related with the money spend (including bribes to whoever's the judge for this thing). This is the reason why there's an oscar specifically made for foreign movies.

Also the oscars are shit and don't really matter.

The Academy voters don't give two shits about animated movies and vote for whatever shit their kids/grandchildren scream about. If Disney or Dreamworks has anything up for nomination, it won't have a chance. Unless there is some massive cocksucking by the US distributor, anime has no chance.
>>
>>161756163
It really is wild that she was given so many opportunities so young.
>>
>>161747728
It did. Funimation did the required minimum screening (two weeks in LA IIRC) at the last minute (December), but completely failed to run any sort of Oscar campaign. I guess they naively thought the Academy would notice the international hype.

People don't understand how much work it is to get a nomination, much less the award. The Academy is made up of professionals in the business and are notoriously cliquey and usually too busy to see half anything but their immediate competition.
>>
>>161756217
This, it
s never gonna happen, these things aren't even voted on by quality but rather "donations" and favorite for the anoyonous assholes in charge, it's all a corrupt money sham that's completely meaningless. all those signers and actors thanking friends, family and god for getting that useless little gold rock are lying to themselves, they need to thank their bribe money and agencies for supplying the right hookers and drugs to the right kinda people, the entire industry is garbage and corrupt, just like every other thing in this rotten sad sick world of ours.

There are hundreds of films every year, in the US alone. You have to distinguish yourself from the pack. If Funimation had done an earlier release and not fucked it up by being arrogant twats by trying to compete with The Fate of the Furious.

It also should be pointed out that the west's mentality on animation is that it's something geared towards kids and is limited to that demographic only, as opposed to Japan's anime and manga industry that caters to every age demographic
Though while often the case for western animation and even eastern, feature length Anime films that make it to the west are often the ones geared towards at least the teen demographic.
lets be honest here, what kind of kid would actually enjoy or actually grasp plenty of the stuff in KnK?
What kind of children's movie has themes like legit harassment in school, suicide and belief that one doesn't deserve to live for their past actions?
KnK isn't something made with kids in mind let alone something they would appreciate, but that won't stop the voters from just glossing over it with the attitude that it is.

I'm working on a set of criteria to predict the Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature. So far I've got:

+ American
+ CG
+ Disney
+ Pixar
+ Dreamworks
+ For Kids
+ Also For Adults
+ Oscar Winning Cast (for acting categories only) (+1 for each cast member)
+ Social Commentary
+ Actually Good

- Sequel
- Foreign
- Adult-Oriented

I'm not sure if this explains "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" though.

Yes, maybe more.
It's a complete cash grab bankrupt of ideas and uses a premise like Wreck It Ralph with a myriad of overdone clichés
>why would it happen now?
Emoticons or "Emoji" as they are called now, are trendier than ever along with social media for some reason and good god is it terrible, pic related.
>Which audience are they targeting?
Vapid tweens most likely. Ironically enough, the kind of tweens that would have their faces glued to their phones rather than the big screen. It completely misses the mark.
Doesn't matter though, they'll get their money, from a mixture of children that don't know any better than to genuinely enjoy it and people going to watch it just to see how shit they knew it would be, or so they can say "I watched it" when they tear it to pieces, either way, Sony Animation will get their money.

I fucking KNEW it was them again. Didn't they make a silly retro videogame movie a couple of years ago, too? With that Sandler whats-his-name? There were billboards all around my town for that one, and I heard it was total shit.
They're tapping into a market and profiting from it, but to a slightly older person it just looks depressing as all hell. Didn't Steve Jobs say something about stupid TV programs "thinking there's a plan to dumb down" in his teenage years, only to realise later that the TV networks are giving the people what they want? It really reminds me of that quote.
>>
>>161759330
Well, that was Columbia studios, a subsidiary of Sony.
Besides, Sony Pictures Animation had a few watchable movies, like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs or Hotel Transylvania, it's just that Sony's handling is a renowned mess to the point the guys behind the movies I mentioned left.
They also love unnecessary sequels and have some weird fixation on The Smurfs too.
This is just another mess in a long trail of shit.
The fact this movie even exists is abhorrent and made me feel like one of those old men that "just doesn't understand today's youth", I'm 22 goddamn it, I shouldn't be feeling so old.
Anyway, enough about that, this line of discussion isn't /a/
>>
>>161758993
>why would it happen now?
Because the needed a movie for the summer that would spawn a line of merchandise.

Hollywood is very profit driven, especially during the summer season. If they can't make a killing off of it, they generally avoid it (Oscar bait excluded). They'd rather have five failures and one trillion dollar franchise.

They don't, half abstain from voting because they haven't watched any of it and they know they aren't qualified to vote, the other half votes despite being in the same predicament, they just vote for whatever their kid liked that year.

That's because it was promoted by Disney that year. No other reason. You do not win the animation Oscar on merit. You win it by having the industry fat cats in your corner.
>>
>>161747432
It's obviously not gonna win. Even the Lego Batman Movie has higher chances. It'll probably go to Coco, the Pixar movie that comes out next month.
>>
The Oscars are literally people in the industry patting themselves on the back and sucking each other off. Why the fuck do people give a shit about this?
>>
>>161762386
Shitty overrated kids movies, shitty conclusion to a mahou shoujo series, what's the difference? Both sucked.
>>
>>161762966
Otaku are starved for validation. Chihiro made them taste blood and now they want more.
>>
>>161747432
I'm not going to explode, I'm going to be extremely disappointed.

FFS, even the Director doesn't think this movie deserves an Oscar so for the love of fuck don't nominate nominate him and don't award him.

And yes I will be more than please if Disney wins again at least his wishes will be respected.
>>
>>161762664
Then the based industry fat cats better work their magic. The man himself does not want an Oscar so better give it whatever Disney movie comes out that year.
>>
If they can push the (((woman director))) narrative, I can see KnK to get at least token foreign film spot on the nomination.
>>
>>161760904
That would be Pinocchio.
>>
>>161762386
Frozen was okay. Hugely overrated, but it had some good moments.
>>
>>161749369
Well, so how would you explain when basically all anime/manga characters looks exactly like white people
>>
>>161756100
That's a scary thought.

About the Rebellion thing ITT, I don't even understand why it got qualified in the first place. It wasn't that good of a movie.
Yeah, it changed a lot of things in the Madoka storyline but there were better movies that year.
>Kotoha no Niwa
>Kaguya Hime
>Kaze Tachinu
Even the third Berserk movie wasn't half bad. Did it qualify just because it seemed artsy?
>>
In this corner of the meme will get nominated
>>
It won't win anything because it's mediocre. All it has going for it is visuals which Kimi no na wa does better anyway. The crappy rushed contrived story should disgust anyone with a modicum of taste. Westerners are obsessed with it because it's literally the only anime movie that actually came out there last year and they were in denial about having to wait for Kimi no na wa and Kono sekai no katasumi ni I assume.

Extreme lefties don't give a shit about handicapped people, all that matters to these retards is skin color and sexual orientation. Ironically they are more racist than anyone.

Academy awards are not important.

>Voter #5: I only watch the ones that my kid wants to see, so I didn’t see [The] Boxtrolls but I saw Big Hero 6 and I saw [How to Train Your] Dragon [2]. We both connected to Big Hero 6 — I just found it to be more satisfying. The biggest snub for me was Chris Miller and Phil Lord not getting in for [The] Lego [Movie]. When a movie is that successful and culturally hits all the right chords and does that kind of box-office — for that movie not to be in over these two obscure freakin’ Chinese fuckin’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw [an apparent reference to the Japanese film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, as well as the Irish film Song of the Sea]? That is my biggest bitch. Most people didn’t even know what they were! How does that happen? That, to me, is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

When they're doing something as big as the Acadamy Awards, you'd think they have a modicum of decency and would not fucking swear.
American people are really strange to me.

Not to mention how uncultured that guy sounds. I'm Bulgarian and we studied a couple of Japanese written works (including the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter). We even worked on translating Kaguya-hime from Bulgarian into English in our English class. I remember all of this because our English teacher screwed up the description of the story - "an old man raises (literally) a girl he'd found in a bamboo stalk and her parents come and take her back immediately. She then commented on how the japanese are very strange and are weird for thinking that was a sad story.
At any rate, the Tale of the Bamboo cutter is a world-famous story, and that guy that doesn't even know about it has no right judging other people's works.
But the Oscars aren't about choosing good works anymore, are they? It's all about shilling your partners' movies to a wider crowd so they can make more money.

If the oscars were about appealing to the "minorities" and garnering sympathy votes, then Moonlight would have won 100/100 times last year.

Moonlight got fucking robbed. Fuck you white America.

I just watched this shitty film last night and I was fucking apalled. WHY is this film so highly praised? Ueno is so fucking shit, and more importantly, why is Ueno even relevant/ a part of their group in the first place? Apparently she likes Ishida in the manga, so she sticks to him like glue, but this isn't explained at all in the anime. Instead, it just looks as though she irrational he hates the deaf girl and they can't ditch her for some reason (because everyone is a pussy?) The bridge scene where everyone starts flaming each other is also possibly one of the most awkwardly scripted scenes in anime film history... almost like trying to talk to a person about their abusive parents in the presence of said parents, without even acknowledging that said parents are right next to you. Except that an entire group of people was doing this to each other. So much of the drama just seemed completely artificial, especially with Ueno and Sahara, that it really just left a bad taste in my mouth. The whole movie greatly reminded me of that one scene in Elfin Lied where those nasty kids kill the puppy.

"Oh great, another movie about bullying"/10

it's pretty obvious in the movie that she wants to jump his bones though

what? it's just Ishida telling them all to fuck off.

Many people got butthurt, then they make the animation category to separate them after that.

This shit right here is why the arts and humanities have nearly completely died off in the West over the past decade. Social media going mainstream was a mistake, it's going to bring up a generation of kids that are going to be complete retards.
