Why is this one so special

In a sea of shit I wouldn't even want to read if handed for free, how did this series actually manage to be worthwhile

And why are so many others failing at that

Light novels in general are trashy excuses for mediocre literature which often fail to construct any coherent structure, story or characters. Most of them are either extremely boring or so edgy that it hurts to read them, since they could've been written by 13-year olds.

This is one of the very few exceptions; it took a unique premise that was admittedly a bit dull, and made it into something fresh and likable, which is mostly because of the fantastic dynamic between the two lead characters. It also somehow made medieval economics interesting, which I found amusing.

LNs are a lot like youtube: for the most part, the main demographic is people that just want to waste time, so everyone shits out garbage constantly

Because if you changed the author name to Jhon Smith you would never imagine it was adapted to anime. Besides Holo design, it really isn't anime-ish. Also, what they say, shit is actually good

The original western release used non-anime cover art and no one bought it though.

Lawrence.

A bit off. It came with a non-anime dust coat and regular innard
>>

No, he's right. The very first print run had a non-anime cover and people had to contact the publisher for an anime dust cover, after that they did the non-anime dust cover thing then kinda dropped it altogether
>>

I have the original print. I glued on the dust cover.
>>
>>161650353
No, he's right.
They released it only with the non-anime cover on the left and fans were really, really butthurt about this.

Yenpress then offered the anime cover as dust cover, while later printings switched this around and had the original cover with a non-anime dustcover

>>161650353
If I had seen the cover on the left without knowing about the series I'd believe it's some trashy romance/borderline-porn novel and wouldn't even bother to have a look at it most likely. That's actually terrible, I'm not surprised nobody bought it.

Because it's a story about the origins of the modern world told as a romance between a merchant and a field of wheat. That's fucking brilliant.

In defense of LNs, they're efficiently designed for people who already have the full library of anime tropes and emotes in their heads. The dialogue is snappy, and descriptions are there to conjure a specific image in the readers' minds. Phrases like "he looked at the food greedily" or "she tilted her head, confused" are to LNs what extended mythological references are to Homer.
It does take a genius to begin with a format designed for high school club shenanigans and retool it for a clever romp through medieval economics.

Which version should I get off goddess?
>>
>>161653027
You're right that it's hard to appreciate LNs without first knowing a lot of common anime tropes, I think that's why they don't get the same level of appreciation as regular novels.
