Zelretch is not the type of character you build a story around. He's the one who instigates the stories in the first place. He isn't a protagonist, but one who creates protagonists. Or, as the case more usually is, deuteragonists. He's similar to Merlin in that regard; Merlin isn't the main character of his tale, but exists to weave the tale of another.

Zelretch would be a terrible narrator. The problem is that he has too much power. He's basically deliberately choosing a timeline in which things go a certain way to his liking.
