The reason why Kakegurui is mediocre is because the gambling has no stakes. The gun skank is a major part of the issue, because from the start we know Yumeko isn't going to die. We know she's not going to get her nails ripped out. We know she's not going to lose a finger. We even know that a 300M debt carries zero weight because she has a ridiculous undefined bank size. It really isn't about gambling so much as the catharsis of seeing rich assholes getting their shit pushed in, and that's greatly mischaracterizing the anime.
Again, litmus test for babby's first x, just like Assassination Classroom and whatever else before it.

Agreed. But what I find even more offensive and disgusting is how easily Jabami gambles on sheer luck with no plan, especially in that last revolver game.
In the same situation, Kaiji would've made everything thing he could to avoid any possibility of him getting his brains shot. But badly-written Jabami goes on recklessly and only survives the first round because the revolver drawn was the empty one, meaning that she willingly threw her life on a 50% chance. And at the end we're supposed to forget about this hole and believe she keikaku'd through the gamble.
Also the sheer stupidity of "don't worry, with appropriate healthcare, you can most likely survive a shot to the head at point-blank from one of these huge-ass revolvers loaded with big unjacketed bullets".

For example, at the beginning of the show Yumeko beat Mary and turned her into a cat. She stated it very clearly that she can pay off her debt easily, it's just that she wanted to revitalize her social standing, but why should we care about her social standing in a school full of faceless nobodies besides Yumeko, Mary and school council?

It would've been cooler if she actually lost her nails to the cunt with cards, for example.

That being said, I dig the games, often times it's kind of like Kaiji but on drugs. Kaiji is all about trying outcheat the cheater in the game, while Yumeko when she spots a cheater prefers to cheat on equal ground, she doesn't mind being cheated on and is in fact disappointed when she sees cheater's sealing of cheating.

Exactly. There's just no sense of danger in Kakegurui. Money bets mean nothing because everybody is impossibly rich and bets millions like they were dimes. And betting your life means nothing either because we know the main character cannot die. And not only the MC, but nobody else dies either. There's no sense of threat in any of this shit, so there's no reason to care. No sense that somebody might actually lose something that matters.

Kakegurui is shit as a gambling anime. It's for ogling at pretty girls in houndstooth skirts, with crazy eyes and detailed lipstick. Ask anything beyond that from it, and it can't deliver.

Do yourself a favor and take a look at Kaiji. It may not be your style, but after watching it you'll know what we mean when we say Kakegurui's gambles have no weight behind them. Kaiji may not have pretty girls in it (there's only one girl and she's hideous), but the gambles in it grab your balls and squeeze until you scream. Fukumoto is the undisputed best ever at making shit tense.

These reasons are why I dropped a new manga series called Mei no maiden. There was a part where the main characters "stops" the antagonists method of cheating (not very well in my opinion, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms), and then proceeds to win 6 50/50 gambles in a row when the antagonist needed to only win like twice. And then somehow she could tell that the guy wasn't "the mastermind" because he was too "weak willed" and discovered that the maid next to him was her mother all along...for reasons.

Why is it so hard for gambling manga to not just jump the shark like that?

Because to be frank, Akagi and Kaiji are the top tier of gambling. Fukumoto actually understands human psychology enough to get it and present a true gambler's creed. Second best I've seen goes to Legendary Gambler Tetsuya, but most of that is centered around the will power to cheat and isn't as good as Kaiji.

All the other gambling shows out there are just pure plot armor, where characters, even when all forms of cheating at the table are done away with, the MC just wins every single time for no reason, and then people get really haughty about their ability to win in a luck-based game.

If you count manga, you'll probably like Ten and to a lesser degree, Gin to Kin. Most people like Ten for it's final 3 volumes, though. I was in awe for the out-of-the-box solutions and the characters' gutsy decisions and strategies, instead, and at the MC's final match, I was worried about how the MC would solve the problem before him. I also liked how it contrasts with how he was in the beginning of the manga.

First off, there's a shitload of tension in Akagi. FKMT knows how to do gambling shit right.

Secondly, Akagi is invincible, but he's invincible done right. We see in great detail how he plans and dismantles the game situation and then the opponent's mind piece by piece. It's not at all like Yumeko, who's borderline retarded but protected by plot armor. Yumeko never does anything particularly clever, she just wins because she's superhumanly lucky or has some other convenient superpower like eidetic memory.
