Likely he knows about where or in what state Lyza is and what's at the bottom of the abyss, maybe even the nature of hte abyss itself. It's likely something the surface shouldn't learn because it'd throw them into a global panic and/or change the abyss itself.

For example, if the abyss is really a giant vertical treadmill of doom that swallows the surface city every 2000 years, on one hand people may be better off not knowing and on the other maybe it's actually something that's necessary for the world to continue as it is and the alternative is worse.

My opinion of this anime dropped considerably in this one episode. I don't think the character Ozen is appropriately thought out. She doesn't compel the story. She's cringeably misplaced. I don't think that the reactions of the MCs were honest either considering Ozen's actions. The story line is drifting. This was false drama for the sake of drama.

Anyway, being honest, these last 2 episodes have been a bit of a low point, we really need to get to layer 4 a bit faster. At the same time, while I understand that people going into it are having their expectations thwarted somewhat is legit, the fact of the matter is that we're still essentially in the Abyss's tutorial area.

The problem is with pacing, I suppose. In the manga things progress at such a brisk pace that it feels legit that there aren't super high stakes yet. However, the way the anime is paced makes it sort of feel like we've already left that far behind on the surface, and I can understand how after 8 episodes people can start feeling like "Alright, when is the dark shit coming?"

It's just an issue of the pace not translating well into animation. I hate to be that faggot that always tells people "Be patient, it gets good, I promise!" that's pretty warranted here.

This series has managed to evoke in me a sense of foreboding, tension and dread that I haven't felt in a while. The idea that everything in the abyss seems to literally be designed to murder people in the most quickest, efficient ways possible is bad enough. When you add onto that the fact that there is a large element of unknown, it just multiplies that unease.

This latest episode, if anything, showed how unprepared and unready Riko and Reg are for the any of the levels that await them. Ten days aren't going to matter much when even blue whistles need to train a couple more years. If you didn't pick up on that, then this series may not be for you.

Game of Thrones isn't striving to be dark, btw. It's just realistic about it's portrayal of the fantasy genre.

I've been noticing people mentioning digibrony and taking him seriously more than usual lately, is there something I'm missing? It's pretty sad. In as much as I can remember from my unfortunate curiosity to go through one of his videos a while back, he's essentially a culmination of the aspects that make a lot of communities outside of /a/ bad for discussion - he's not very smart or well-informed, but he wants to look like he is, so he presents ignorant and simple-minded opinions in a verbose format and tries to make them seem like they're clever and complex opinions that only someone of his genius could have come up with. In other words, he's like a low-tier shitposter deluding themselves into thinking they're a god-tier critic and writing a bloated essay instead of a one-line shitpost to convince equally stupid people of how sophisticated their opinion is. And for that reason, it isn't worth caring about his opinion, since the dumber shitposters here can give you the same shit in a tiny fraction of the time. You're better than this, /a/nons. I also realise the irony of shitting up the thread with this opinion, but I won't say any more about it, just wanted to vent on this shit, all the other shitposting we get in these threads seems very tolerable in comparison.

Anyway, as a mangafag, I've enjoyed the adaptation so far. I think it's improved on some aspects, and the soundtrack really brings a lot to it. I don't have too much of an issue with the pacing, I think it contributes to the atmosphere in a good way, and I'd actually say I enjoyed episode 4 and 5 more than the same parts in the manga, for the most part. It does get a bit too slow at times, but otherwise the only reason I have to care about the pacing being slow is the lack of bonedad, since I can't really think of a good place for it to end other than the "challengers of the abyss" speech at the end of his arc.

I think it's still possible for them to get that far with some small cuts and a gear change, but it would be too jarring at this point, and would damage what the atmosphere has right now. At this point, I'm just happy to keep watching and enjoy what they do for what it is, instead of getting caught up on what they'll cover from the manga, and insisting they rush over things to the point where they're just presented as a lazy collection of plot points, as some people seem to want.

I'm also happy they aren't trying to get into the dark and edgy tone some are anticipating - part of what I like about the manga is that despite the suffering and other grim things later, it doesn't really lose sight of being a fun fantasy adventure series - the tone never shifts in a jarring way, and it never fails to return to a more light-hearted "our adventure will continue".

Ozen was predictably inferior to how they were handled in the manga, but that was to be expected, since the stylised depiction they have is hard to transition to anime. The first half of episode 7 did fuck up more than I expected, though - the framing on a lot of the shots just didn't compare to the panelling in the manga. Obviously they can't just copy the panels, that would look retarded mostly, but they could've done a way better job, like most /a/nons have pointed out.

Release schedules are definitely a major limitation, in both manga and anime.

Imagine a world where, instead of releasing monthly, they just released entire series all at once. Not only would the pacing be significantly better constructed for protracted reading, but the basic design of how it flows would probably be given much more breathing room.

As of right now, artists essentially have to make sure their pacing works for two completely contradictory forms; serial, and by volume. They're not super compatible. When writing for a serial, you have to write it where every chapter has a notable payoff and something important happens, or else people tuning in on a weekly/monthly basis will be disappointed. However, if you were releasing it by just volume-to-volume, you could afford to let really let things build up. And then things get even MORE complicated in the pacing department because that shit also needs to be translated into the animated medium, which has it's own issues regarding pace adaptation.

So, I guess you can render how pacing works into 4 distinct stages: Manga serial pacing, Manga volume pacing, anime serial pacing, and anime binge pacing.

And at each stage of those hierarchies there's a lot of shit that can be messed up during the transition from one to another, and there are certain stories which lend themselves well to certain stages in that flow.

For example, Jojolion works best as a serial because the suspense is a major part of the story. Something like Made in Abyss is probably better read all at once.

It will almost guaranteed end with them saying their goodbyes and the rest of the Ozen flashback. They will probably expand on the training arc slightly and make that the first half of the episode, and then have Ozen's info dump on misc shit, the flashback, and goodbye as the second half. They can't really stretch the training out much farther than that if they want to go up until Nanachi joining with around the pace they've been at. If we don't get the goodbyes next week one of the future episodes will have to be very rushed if we want to end on Riko recovering and them leaving Nanachi's hut.
