I have always been impressed how Evangelion did this right. Asuka was introduced in ep 7 (I think...) and she seriously stirred things up. The first eps give a false sense of peace and acceptance, showing how Shinji slowly adpats to his new lifestyle, makes some friends, gets closer to Misato, etc. But we know that it is all superficial, when Asuka arrives everything gets shaken up.

On the other hand, she's such a fundamental character, that you start to wonder how the series worked before her arrival.

Evangelion is truly a masterpiece with perfect flow and pacing.

The first 8 episodes were great. The art, animation and concepts were really well done. Then they dove into the overarching plot which really sucked by comparison, and only dumb yurifags enjoyed.

This is pretty good when done right, using magic in various ways to improve your fighting with sword in close quarters. Though I've never seen it in anime or manga before.
