Is it really that much sci-fi since they do live in a world where blackboards are electronic, the chairs spring up from the ground and can declare them absent, plus the world's tech seems just so much more advanced, although the focus on that was just sort of drawn away and we never know just how far in the future they are when the series takes place, unless I missed something.

Personally i suggest watching the show instead of movings. Scenes switch rapidly it could be a bit abysmal. The movie doesnt use moviemaking tricks, usually movies have less but longer scenes. In the tv show it feels placed nicely and you wont feel overwhelmed. Its easier to pickup, however i suggest for people that watched the show, to exclusively rewatch it in any further sessions as movies.

Series pacing, cliffhangers, OP/ED, etc. really help.

Movie 1 does a good job keeping the story in piece but it really does remove a lot of little bits that add to it all to flesh out the characters more. I would definitely watch Episodes 1-8 over Movie 1. The first movie cuts out the beginning scene which is really unfortunate because of how much impact it adds to your experience later on. There are a few scenes where I think the original music was more impactful, but was understandably changed in the movie for various reasons. One of them being, since it's a movie that you watch at once, you can't have the important soundtracks play so often (they really are amazing though even after hearing them many times in the show). Another reason was because the pacing was done in mind for a movie, the music was changed to fit a different dramatic purpose for each scene. Some people like the newer music for some parts but others like the original as it's more iconic.

However, for Episodes 9-12, I'd say you could actually watch Movie 2. It doesn't cut anything out (maybe they cut scenes slightly but not like dialogue or story), and actually fleshes a couple scenes out more and makes them much more beautiful. One of these scenes is near the beginning about 20 minutes in, the other is a few mins after. I think Movie 2 is actually a strict improvement over the TV series particularly because of those two parts being fleshed out more and having some new beautiful animation. The only reason why I can't say it's strictly better is because of the music changes. There are a couple impactful scenes near the end that have iconic tracks changed in favor of other tracks or for new tracks. I don't exactly think they're worse, but it is a slightly different experience from what most people will have experienced. There's also one particular cliffhanger in the 2nd to last episode that is timed with the ED extremely well.

I kinda feel I missed out a on a lot marathoning the series. It's good, but not the best thing since sliced bread. When I marathoned the series, shit all around was far too obvious and the changes in tone were basically un-noticable.

Interesting. Most of the great anime from 2006-2011 I marathoned, so I guess I don't really have something to compare to. But watching it episode by episode and waiting week by week I could definitely see add to the tension and excitement. For example, hoping something big happens by the end of the episode, and then getting what you want and feeling very satisfied or the episode building up to the next.

Overall though I think the way episodes start and end compared to movies really emphasis certain points of the story well. At least you still have that when marathoning.

One thing I do enjoy from marathoning though is I'm able to better remember all the feelings/emotions/events that happened throughout, contributing to me experiencing a higher height in intensity.

I say that as someone who only watched from the sidelines when it happened and only watched the show + movie relatively recently, after getting endlessly bugged about it by my brother.
In the end, he also marathoned the series and felt it didn't live up to the hype before watching the movie and claiming it's one of his all time favorites.

Looking back into the archived threads and stuff, a lot of what made the series so fun for /a/ was that people had to deal with this shit on a weekly basis and were anxious to get the next episode already for all the theories and shit that sprung up.
The show being far too obvious to me about a lot of things is a bad thing as I could see what was coming up minutes ahead, but it definitely feels great having quessed correctly if you waited a month or more for your guess to be proven correct. And Madoka is full of that.

They completely gutted Mami's character, you don't see her wish at all.
They removed the explanations for what familiars are and how they turn into witches, making Kyouko's later statement of "Mami must have explained this to you, right?" actually false.
They removed the scene in episode 6 where Madoka tries to convince Sayaka not to fight Kyouko but Sayaka doubles down on her resolve.
They removed the "but that's forbidden love" scene.
They removed the amazing scene where Homura tries to kill Sayaka.
Proabably some others I'm forgetting.

The movies look pretty, sure, but the structure of them is all fucked up. The story works way better episodically. Luminous is awful as an OP because it makes the relationship between Madoka and Homura incredibly obvious - talk about spoiling things. Then they play Connect midway through the second movie, which is jarring.

The dream sequence in the series on the other hand makes for a nice mystery - the standard magical girl trope is that it would be a vision of the future (a la Cardcaptor), but it turns out to be a previous alternate timeline, and a mistake rather than something that should happen.
