His narration adds a lot to what's happening and tell us more about his personality as a normiefied excentric, and the unreliable part of it makes for an appropriate development when he realizes how important the SOS Brigade is to him, which the spectator up to this point can doubt, especially after season 2. It's appropriate in the sense that people can arbitrarily reject stuff that don't fit their preconceptions and works with the story since Haruhi is all about getting out of the comfort zone. He displays a lot of personality with his thoughts (more than his spoken dialogues for sure), and works great as Haruhi's foil while also slowly becoming another Haruhi himself.

Next to Yuki, despite constantly talking shit about him Kyon trusts Koizumi more than Mikuru. Kyon had nothing against small Mikuru, but he's extremely distrustful of big Mikuru who's pulling the strings and he disapprove old Mikuru's treatment of small Mikuru.

When it is clutchtime, Kyon acknowledges that Koizumi's his only ally who's allegiance firmly belong to Haruhi the person and not his particular faction
