These stories are the height of 20th century Japanese fiction? How can anyone see these egocentric tales of self-loathing and consider them anything more than run-of-the-mill stories of sadness and depression?

2. The height of 20th century Japanese fiction is 草枕 by Natsume Soseki followed by anything by Yukio Mishima.

The first story seemed to only be relevant because of the gossip/mystery surrounding it. At least the way the anime portrayed it was shallow as all hell.
