Unless they change the plots of multiple episodes it can't be butchered anymore than the original series did to it.

It looks a lot better than the original Kino and has her best design.

The 2003 Kino anime is over a decade old, why are so many people basing their expectations of this new adaptation on it?

Those shows are totally different circumstances. Mushishi S2 came out 8 years after S1, but it was also an explicit continuation with the same staff. Natsume Yuujinchou has regularly had new seasons ever since the original anime. This is a new, separate adaptation with different staff.
