Problem with private trackers is the same with pirate BBS'. You think you're safe until you're not. IPs are easy to trace. Anything hitting the US is subject to US privacy laws. You have to upload and thus are breaking the law when you do so, 100%.
I personally prefer the more anonymous route.

Nothing, because I've had an account for years and already archived everything I want onto my NAS server. And even if I didn't, having a seedbox makes freeleech not a big deal.

Sitewide freeleech always seems to happen right after I've already spent a bunch of buffer on downloading a bunch of things and am I no longer really on the lookout to download anything in particular.

there are mainly two types of people at AB:
1. weebs - this is probably 90% of the people who actually post on the forums, comment on torrent pages, upload screenshots, etc.
2. the /ptg/ types, who either don't care or have only a passing interest in the content, but use AB as a stepping stone or because they like to 'collect' trackers. these types generally don't post in the forums but are likely to actually seed/upload and have better connections.

the community benefits from both. IMO it's more important for a tracker to have the 2nd type though, and if you're just looking for a community to talk about anime stick with /a/ or other sites.

I don't even know what to get. I usually try to download better versions of shows I already have, but I already did that the last freelech. Last time I had to check some soundtracks to at least have something to download.

Nobody NEEDS an AB or BBT account, but when you need it, it really comes in handy.

For example, I wanted to rewatch Death Note a few weeks ago, and when I went to my archive, I realized that back in 2008 or whenever I originally downloaded it, I had downloaded a standard definition version with hardsubs - not the bluray version. So, I needed to download a good bluray encode of a 2007 series.

There are many torrents listed on nyaa.si and TT, but you have no idea what you're getting most of the time. Some of hem have extraordinarily large file sizes. Others are from an obscure group. With some of them, when you download expecting a softsub, you'll find it will have hardsubbed karaoke subs and hardsubbed (animated) karaoke insert songs. Very frequently, there is a separate subtitle track for "signs," which doesn't contain subtitles for dialogues, but is set as default for some reason, so you'll always need to Next Subtitle when you open up a file. It's just a total shitshow.

It's really not funny. Think about sources for anime. We're down to one reliable torrent site, a handful of nyaa clones, tokyo tosho, and IRC. The fragility of the free anime delivery system has gone way way up. And this isn't even taking into account the death of fansub groups.

In november I'm going to try and archive as much as I can, but between now and then any major shocks could really screw up the system. 99.99% of people are utterly reliant on the internet so they can download shows they don't have on their HDDs, but the wild west days are quickly going away.
