I don't think everybody had killed themselves. The only ones who might have were Reki and maybe Rakka. I think suicides have something to do with the black wings, or at least make them more likely.

I've always considered Glie to be a bigger version of the well symbolism. Rakka finding peace of mind when she buried the crow is the same thing as Reki asking for help in the end.

And the main message being that we have to surrender and immerse ourselves into the unknowable, and that we can truly find ourselves when we look outside to others and finding peace with the universe is an individual journey which cannot be imparted to another. No amount of grief and guilt will enable us to overcome our obstacles.

Pretty much a symbol of life and its spiritual limitations where the wingless people found bliss by supporting each other with small deeds. Is it justified and deserved if it's based on blissful ignorance? Maybe.
