It had awful characters, an incoherent plot, and worldbuilding that made little to no sense. Because these are the metrics usually used to measure the quality of a show, a lot of people hated it. Simply put, SAO was trash because of the blatant disrespect given to all other characters besides generic godmode MC. Kirito can fuck up however he wants, but he has plot armor and is never punished. This is why I hated it. Stupid yellow midget should have played his story straight instead of the stupid idea of leapfrogging between different games. That "final boss battle" was so out of left field that I thought the show ended halfway through the season. Then he scrubbed the original cast, added in a bunch of new characters, removed any feeling of risk or urgency in the battles, and didn't even have the stones to give us that tasty incest to make up for it. I couldn't make it past the second game, and I highly doubt this shit got any better

Some shows are good, and some shows are bad. In entertainment, being boring is worse than simply being bad (because bad can still be entertaining). What's even worse than that is having interesting ideas but failing to deliver on them.

SAO falls into the latter category. The first one or two episodes had such a great and atmospheric setting, but then it dropped it all by episode 5 or so in favor of wanking of Kirito, who is utterly bland in all respects other than being OP and a pussy magnet. I understand why it's popular with the target demographic (15 year olds boys?): it's the ultimate self-insert fantasy for shy and geeky guys who like vidya.

In the end I'd say that it's a disappointing but harmless show. Why it gets such excessive hate from e-celebs is simple: it's a deeply flawed show that's also highly popular. It allows these e-celebs to tear this show a new one with the guaran-fucking-tee that they'll get tons of views. This is why SAO is the show everyone loves to hate, even though I'd call it mediocre at best, subpar at worst.

Appealing characters are standard fare. Kirito decides to be a loner because of the reaction after people find out he's a beater. Even then he tries to connect to people by hiding his level/status, but you know how that goes. Being shunned and then indirectly causing the deaths of several people is enough of a reason for a character to not want to interact with others.

He's edgy and the writing appeals to a younger audience but it's nothing to get assblasted about. The storytelling and animation are pretty good. It's honestly not nearly as edgy as it could be for a "death game" setting.

What pisses me off the most about this is that Heathcliff appeared to be another gamer with a unique ability. It made Kirito look incredibly strong compared to the average chump, but near the bottom of the elites. That's a very interesting place to be for a shonen protagonist: it makes him look competent, but with room to grow.

Of course Reiki retroactively ruined this by making the only guy stronger than Kirito the end boss programmer cheater. Because nobody is allowed to be better than Kirito under any circumstances.

Yeah he rarely struggles with competition 1 on 1, but a lot of the show doesn't revolve around that, which is good since a show focusing on power levels falls into a pattern of characters constantly one-upping the others because of arbitrary reasons and strategy. SAO does a good amount of focusing on problems that can't be solved by simply overpowering enemies in the digital world, which helps to make it compelling. That said, there's still a good amount of wish fulfillment, because Kirito is a bit smoother, stronger, and lucky that things go his way than the average avatar.
