The old show clearly had a miniscule budget to work with, and it was made at a time where most anime looked like trash due to the switch to digital animation and the growing pains that came with it. 2003 Kino tried to overcome those shortcomings with a ton of stylistic embellishments, which worked to its benefit, but it was still far from an aesthetic show. That said, this new series is looking kinda bland, and that's the worst thing that a Kino no Tabi adaptation can be. I'm still one of the more optimistic ones, though.

Hell, I feel like a filthy casual and I was a huge fan of the anime back in 2003, watched all the OVAs and read the one LN that got an official release. But there's too much I'm not aware of, like who the little girl with Shizu is, or whether that woman in the top right is actually young Master, so I was keeping my mouth shut and hoping someone else would confirm it.

Roughly more than half of the LNs have been translated on baka-tsuki, so you can always start reading.

The white-haired loli is introduced in the epilogue of volume 8 (http://untuned-strings.blogspot.com/2011/10/kinos-journey-volume-8-epilogue.html) and the woman in the top right is a young Master. Personally I think the anime messed with the overall tone of the series, making it more somber and quiet and introspective when there are moments of silliness and brutal descriptions of violence that the characters either inflict on others are witness. I find it weird they drastically changed a whole story from Kino visiting a land of libraries and being a huge fucking nerd and reading all day, gushing about books she read with a librarian, and seeing a new author off to Kino getting caught up in a rebellion over people trying to protect a reality-altering copy of a book a mysterious man wrote.

All the stories are parables or short stories and emphasis of them aren't to pose the mistakes of society and its peoples, but to present ideas and concepts and leave them for the reader to come to their own conclusions as Kino or the others interact with the residents and more importantly, to tell an interesting story. The world is a scary, terrible place, but it's not a dark and melancholy one when there's joy and happiness and peace to be found wherever you look as well.

Fucker got bit one day and Megu-nee chained him to a corner of a room to study it becoming a zombie, then threw it out the window when she was done. Miki suffered way more before meeting the club and they messed with the dynamic the manga presented with her being the odd man out. They removed Helicopter-kun, removed Yuki's post-fire scene but most importantly removed the fucking thigh-nibbling. That's the worst thing of all.

The original anime run was good on its own merits, and that's because Nakamura used the basic setup and world of Kino's Journey as a foundation to explore things he wanted to look at and essentially tell his own story. The original anime was measured, tranquil even in violence, surreal, and very philosophical. It aims for one tone and strikes it dead on.

The LN, on the other hand, took more to portraying Kino's Journey as simply a journey. It showed nonsense as often as it showed reason, as well as cruelty, kindness, comedy, tragedy, etc. There were even chapters told from the perspectives of other characters recounting their interactions with Kino. It showed the imperfections of the world, and how those can beautiful, ugly, and even amusing when looked at a certain way. Even in the LN Kino has substantially more of a character to her going on than in the anime, and that's because the anime wanted to use Kino as an excuse to portray its setting through a stranger's eyes.

LN Kino's Journey portrays a more diversified, absurd world that at times clashes with itself with no clear rhythm, because sometimes that's just how the world is. No everything makes sense, nor is everything easy, nor serious. Kino, from the start, realized this, and that's precisely why she fell in love with it.

All I really want is a more straightforward adaption of the LN's, and let the original anime run stand alone as the unique experience it is.

I would also say that it might take some time for her to get in-character and/or polish her performance.
If you listen to say, Madoka or Tanya on episode one and compare it to any episode immediately after you will notice differences.

This is how I feel on the matter too, way too many people on here think the original anime is faithful to what the LN is, or that all the stuff and tone that Nakamura added in is what Kino is, when it really isn't. It was nice, but I like the LN more and it's nice to finally a see a chance at it being properly adapted.

I'm not nearly as worried about designs as I am the director. Look what the old director has done, and look what the new director has done. It's not comparable. The atmosphere, musical cues, scene composition and colors helped make the show, and the new guy just can't do any of that.

Because they are actually following the art style of the LNs and it is actually advertised as an adaptation. Nakamura is dead after all, so following his vision for things isn't easy. Lots of people, including myself, have been hoping that Kino no Tabi would get a faithful adaption in the first place, which is contrary to what the original series tried to do but makes perfect sense. And there are plenty of decent adaptations which come from directors with only a few other anime on their belt.
