Here's my interpretation: the only valuable thing in Griffith's life was Guts, and this is clearly expressed when he mentions how he was the only one that made him forget his dream. We already know of the events that transpired after Guts abandoned the Band of the Hawk and the ruin that it brought upon Griffith.
