Amon is just weird, non canon and doesn't fix anything since it's an interquel that leads to the same ending. The original ending is great but I can see why someone wouldn't like it. Devilman Lady and Saga are the sequels that expand on it but things just get weirder and edgier, I like it though.

The series of Devilman assumes that the Divine Comedy was a series of actual events that really happened. It's part of the setting. Ryo speaks about it during volume 1.

You're right, that part was rushed. That said, in the deluxe edition, Nagai drew a proper 10 page conclusion to this story. You'll probably see it when Seven Seas releases the manga.
