Why would a grade schooler backpack cost $350?
>>
because japan

watermelons are like $50 in japan
>>
Aren't randoseru supposed to last forever?
>>
Not made in china so last forever
>>
>>160765404
Yeah but who the fuck is going to use a bright red kid's backpack? Kids probably get tired of that shit by the time they're 12 or something.

>Why would a grade schooler backpack cost $350?
You know the saying "they don't make it like they used to"?
The Japanese school backpack is what happens when they STILL make it like they used to.

You either spend the money to have something that lasts, or spend more money replacing the bag every year.
>>
>>160766385
backpacks cost $20 where I live, you could replace it every year from K-12 and it still would cost you less than buying one $350 backpack up front.

This is why japs live in tiny 600 sq ft apartments, they can't into money management.
>>
>>160765141
Welcome to child raising 101, this is no different than what they make parents pay in the western world because they know kids NEED that stuff for schools and they know parents will or have to pay ungodly ammounts of money for it. Shits ridiculously overpriced just for little stuff.

>>160766032
>Kids probably get tired of that shit by the time they're 12 or something
I'm pretty sure they're mandatory at a certain age in Japan.
>>
>>160765141

>>160766499
>I'm pretty sure they're mandatory at a certain age in Japan.
I don't know how jap schools work, but I guess it could be part of a uniform policy. If anime is realistic at all, it seems like no one uses them outside of elementary school.
>>
>>160766482
>This is why japs live in tiny 600 sq ft apartments
You mean, like most people who live in cities?
>>
>>160766715
only people with poor money management skills live in large cities

>>160766751
Suburban/rural life is boring as shit.
>>
>>160766751
If you have the money living in the city is 1000x better than commuting there. Living and working in the country/suburbs is tops though.
>>
>>160766032
If that were true there wouldn't be a market for them because in a country with a declining birth rate the first generation of randoseru would still be in circulation. They are durable, sure, but they're still disposable. And as >>160766482 points out, not financially sensible. Tohru had it right, the shit is a conspiracy used to perpetuate and subsidize Japanese leather goods. Not the only of its kind of course, deals between education bureaucracy's and other industries are nothing new, and ranges from the price of textbooks, banning of hot plates in dorms, dolphin meat in school lunches of certain towns, the list goes on.
>>
>>160765141

I'll give a serious answer because I saw a thing on NHK world about them. Each one is individually handmade. They use horse and pig leather. Unlike an American backpack that'll last a year or two if you're lucky, these last throughout the whole Elementary school.
>>
>>160767000
i was amazed to find out that some american universities force you to get a dorm on-campus for the first year and their meal plans are mandatory because they don't want you cooking there

it's like high school all over again, throw some forced GE classes in there and it's literally high school

I use a pic related. I've been using it for 5 years already all year long(school and work), and it's still in good condition. Shit was $60 freedoms but it was worth.
Now, it was expensive if you think as a poorfag, but buying a kindergarten backpack for fucking $350, which is used for like 3 years? That's retarded, unless you're filthy rich and don't care.

Notebooks fit perfect, even gym clothes. Shit is spacious. I don't know how.
One compartment for pens, ruler, and calculator. What else do you need?

>it doesn't even have any padding to protect your things when you drop the backpack on the ground
Yes, my laptop has suffered the consequences, but I solved it just putting clothes on the bottom and its good to go.

Then again, unless you're underage or care about "organized" compartments, it's not for you. Although we all know, you're just gonna end up throwing everything in the backpack and don't care about organization.
>>

>>
>>160768177
>justifies
Whats there to justify? People are retarded enough to buy them so it seems like proper pricing?! Point is that comparing a throwaway backpack to a properly made one, especially when both are made from different materials, is completely retarded. Youre basically saying A should have the same price as B because both fill the same purpose. This is like those gaming laptop arguments, with people ignoring the portability of the laptop when judging the price. Makes no fucking sense. Maybe Japanese schools have a lot of fighting so you need a strong backpack that lasts, who the fuck knows. If anime are any indication that Japanese kids sure have it rough.

You know why the Japanese do something? Because they've always done so.
They have a very hard time breaking an established tradition, even though it makes no sense whatsoever.

Japan needs a cultural revolution. Some sort of a wave of "out with old dumb shit"... but then they'd probably just ruin that too by slavishly following that to their doom, destroying their heritage.

Yes, but a top-end seiyuu has objective standards to which they must adhere in their progress to the top. Professors are almost all in the same line of thought, and their progress and stature at the top is incredibly insulated from outside criticism so long as they say the right things. You can't just be a shitty VA and get to the top echelon of seiyuu. You can, however, be a shitty "academic" and rise to the top tier of educators.

Every time I read about American education it gets worse. I went to college in the early 2000s and never had to buy anything other than copies. I went back for an electrical engineering degree which I finished a couple of years ago and everything had become even more convenient: online and free all the way. Being a student gave me access to dozens of digital resources like the Safari technical library with everything paid for. I also made around 3000€ each year through scholarships. It's a completely different world.

This never happens in burgerstan. The most you can hope for is to chip at or negate (if you're accomplished or lucky) the obligatorily incurred debt. I made like $700 USD from post-secondary education scholarships one time, but that was basically just because I took only a few courses during 1 semester at a community college; it's ludicrous to assume that the same would happen at a university or main college. Regardless, this is what happens when you let some fuckstick sign the Federal Reserve into law. Wilson was the actual worst president of the United States.

Nigger I have a molle 36 liter backpack I had for highschool, use for camping, and now for college.

That poor thing has pretty much seen war, the hell of public education, flooding, and 25 pounds of daily commute textbooks and what not.

It cost me 150$ roughly off Amazon. Seven very solid years of abuse. No leather. And I'm more than sure I can get another three out of it.

Buy once, cry once. American made can be affordable and quality.

Nips just charge what they do because of government beuocracy.

Copying sections we need, giving formula packets for notes, having well encompassing text books for multiple semesters, showing where to buy the 25$ paper cover version of books, how to file hard cover books as being tax deductible for work as many we use are used in mechanical engineering as references, even telling us that there's a good chance of finding digital version of 500$ textbooks online.

This backpack right here costs $60 when it launched. While mine is black/grey. I've used it since 2011. It has endured school books, trading card binders, clothes for trips, rain, being forgotten under clothes until needed and laptops AND it still performs really well. This bag could go another 7 years and could last the entire school life. You don't need a $350 backpack.

If I know anything from my previous stint in sales is that people will pay as much as they feel comfortable with. Most people are buying the most they can get for the least, the bang for the buck folks. Then you have a good 15% of customers that want to spend every single dime they can afford and put the rest on credit to buy the most expensive thing they can. Good for commissions and you would insult them for suggesting they should get the most bang for their buck so just let them buy what they want.

obviously the fallbacks are less prestigious shitholes, but they're cheaper

the uniform is the least of their concerns
private schools are $10,000/year while public are $3600/year

also worthy to note that in japan school is only compulsory up until middle school.

That's how it should be,really.
Unless you're going into a STEM field, then you don't need high school. This is further highlighted by the fact that first year of college is just general high school classes.

Also, I can see why the Japanese don't have children often. $360/mo for public school is pretty outrageous.

It's honestly not that bad.

Housing is actually reasonably cheap, but depends where you are looking. I'm paying about 55,000yen a month on rent and that includes internet access. My power bill is around 4,000 a month, gas around 4,000, water around 3,000.
Japan doesn't have vast land area or conditions for growing high quantities of a lot of produce, so the prices are kinda high for fruits, but it's not terrible. I spend about 20,000 a month on food and that includes eating out a few times a month.
Random backpacks cost $20 in Japan as well. School backpacks are mandated, no different from textbooks costing $200 (and you can't use last year's textbook because there is a new revision). Japan is no different from the rest of the world in that schools try to shaft money any way they can.
They don't go to school on a Sunday unless they have special club activities, and even if they have Saturday classes it's only half a day. Still many of them work their asses off, their culture needs to develop more individual self worth.

Meanwhile in America

>1919
The Elaine massacre, began on September 30–October 1, 1919 at Hoop Spur in the vicinity ofElainein ruralPhillips County, Arkansas. With an estimated 100 to 237 blacks killed

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elaine_race_riot

>1920
The Tulsa Race Riots ended with estimated 60 African-Americans and 21 white residents are killed. In addition to these casualties, the African-American business district known as Deep Greenwood was destroyed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa_race_riot

>1923
A series of black lynching in Florida ends with the destruction of a black community.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosewood_massacre

And this after slavery was abolished. So yea Americans (of all people) have no right to complain about past atrocities.

But to be fair is I doubt that there is a country that is completely free of massacres, lynching and other hateful crimes.

m8, those super expensives fruits are gifts given on "important" or "serious" visits, like visiting someone being hospitalized, just like people would offer expensive chocolates in other countries, or things like that

those fruits are supposed to have a super perfect appearance and are hard to produce, so yeah, they're super expensive

of course for their everyday food they have "normally" priced fruits (though they are still quite expensive by European/Murrikan standards)

So it seems:
"The crown prince of the time was given a backpack upon entering elementary school (at Gakushūin). To honour the soldiers of the country, the shape of the backpack resembled the backpacks used in the military. This quite immediately became the fashion, and the shape has continued to become the randoseru used today. However, at that time most of the Japanese people could not afford such an expensive bag. Until the dramatic rise of economy in Japan in the post-World War II period, "

It doesn't. Even with the so-called "herbivorous men" japanese people still have plenty of sex. What they don't have is natality, wich has more to do wich economic stability of households, prevention and wealth than sex.
Japanese people don't make kids because they don't want to, not because they fuck less.

They do fuck, they just make extra sure not to have kids.

Most people live in big cities.
In cramped apartments.
Work outrageous hours.
Barely get by.

You're aksing them to.
Cover the expenses of a newborn.
Put them inside the aleady cramped apartment.
Pay expensive childcare services since you absolutely can't skip work.
Almost never see them because you leave while they're still sleeping and come back home after they're already asleep.
And then they strat going to school.
And you'll have to pay the school tuition.
You'll have to cover cram school because kids without cram school have no future.
You'll have to buy them a set of expensive uniforms.
You'll have to buy them an expensive backpack.
Let's not forget commuting to school and expenses tied to that.

It might sound like I'm overexagerrating but they are aware of it and view it similarly. It's why most wait and wait and wait to get a decent enough position that they could cover the expenses and still see their loved ones.
But thanks to how the Japanese economy works, they don't get any of that until they're about 40. And have fun racing the clock to have even a single kid as a pair of 38-42 year old people.

It gets much less reatrded the further away from cities you get. But your kids want to have a future, so they're going to want to work/study in the big city themselves and you simply skipped theproblem by a generation.

>Psychology
>Now, a painstaking yearslong effort to reproduce 100 studies published in three leading psychology journals has found that more than half of the findings did not hold up when retested. The analysis was done by research psychologists, many of whom volunteered their time to double-check what they considered important work. Their conclusions, reported Thursday in the journal Science, have confirmed the worst fears of scientists who have long worried that the field needed a strong correction.
>“I think we knew or suspected that the literature had problems, but to see it so clearly, on such a large scale — it’s unprecedented,” said Jelte Wicherts, an associate professor in the department of methodology and statistics at Tilburg University in the Netherlands.

>>160801191
I kinda cobbled the quotes together.
Basically, scientists from other fields wanted to test psychology because of shit like the Mariko Aoki Phenomenon and other such funky pseudoscience.
They had psychologists pick the most important, well known and cited works from 2008 onward.
They did a simple test of recreating the sample size and conditions.
Only 36% of them produced reproducible results. You're looking at the amount of truth vs made up bullshit comparable to medieval medicine.
