>Main character's rival being beaten by bad guy
>His foot is injured
>He made a promise to meet the protag in the finale
>Suddenly his eyes start glowing
>Bad guy backs off
>He starts moving with high difficulty
>It's established that he can't fully utilise his footwork
>He throws a punch along with the bad guy
>looks like he's about to move with plot power
>despite his best efforts he isn't able to move that fast and hence can't land his punch before the bad guy
Is this the finest subversion in all anime?
I think it's almost common in sports manga/anime to have the "destined rival" be taken down by a new and more powerful challenger.
Itagaki getting curbstomped was the best moment of ippo

Yes. The difference here is that the enemy won with a cheap trick. Usually the enemy that BTFOs the rival is usually much stronger. Here Miyata was much more skilled and would have been a more challenging opponent.Yet contrary to usual expectations the less skilled and more unstable enemy won. Hence a subversion.

Truth.
When is miyata going to stop dragging his feet and do some shit

He lost his motivation because Ippo is such a shitty rival.

of course, shitppo just can't deliver: to the coach, to his love interest, to his rival, etc. you name it.
Why is Miyata so shit.
