Well about 20 minutes in my mind kinda numbed from whatever was happening, and I ended up skimming the video footage for scenes that looked interesting.
I wasn't really that good, as expected. But for some reason I kinda was left wanting to know more..?
The only things I had feelings for was when Misato decided not to blow up Shinji, and the ending in which everyone is together again. That's it. the rest of the movie may as well have not been anything worth remembering.
There was a flying whale, a whole bunch of homoerotic pandering, something about twin longinus, and something something the fourth impact. The only time I found myself paying attention was when Misato with the crew, Asuka, and Rei were on screen.
I expected nothing, and I wasn't dissapointed.

We don't know where the ship came from, but it only came online in the movie and they mention fleeing from combat historically. There was a war, the details aren't given, it ends with EVA-like drones patrolling the world, Gendo's faction inside an EVA factory, and Misato's fleet on the run until they gain a weapon capable of challenging them.

The biggest part I didn't understand about 3.0 is Anno shitting in the entire timeline.

If the progress of the souls carries over because souls are eternal, and we did see slightly "stronger" versions of the main characters (asuka opening up to someone, misato getting shinji to pilot without manipulating him, Rei being ever so slightly less autistic, Shinji trying to advance)...he then just said HA! fuck this progress, you should have none of it.

I understand shinji going back on his progress, its part of the plot to make him suffer. But I can't understand why it happened to the others as well

Fleshed out, yeah. In the TV show, their characters have more purpose and are part of the overarching themes. They were basically walking personality disorders. Still, those people exist.
The movies gave them more normal personalities and they were shown to change faster. Because that was a movie and they became more shallow characters. They were allowed progression, but through non-organic means. "Fleshed out", but without anything to it. In the end, their characters didn't matter much as the plot would have gotten them this way or the other. While the movie is trying to show "everything can change", its approach is minimal and also doesn't really show.
TV Eva characters weren't as versatile, but they did start to change slowly throughout the show, thus had a more realistic approach.
