Eva is definitely much more melodramatic. Plus the contrast of the lighthearted parts make the dark parts seem even darker. Whereas Ergo Proxy is more consistent in its mood, I think.

I don't know about that. Given the circumstances, the characters reacted reasonably, imo. If you mean the actual stuff that happens then I'd have to say it's pretty standard for anime. Over-the-top melodrama with gratuitous violence and (mental) torture-porn. Since we're comparing the two, I'd say Ergo Proxy is much more "subdued" and "chill" in regards to the stuff that happens.
Anyway, I always compare Eva and Ergo Proxy. Your comment made me think about the ways in which they aren't as similar as I had thought.

It's like when people say the 90s was a golden age for anime, but they can only come up with 10 shows they fondly remember from the entire decade, 9/10 are usually something that was aired on western cable tv, too.
