The first fucking episode is just wierd. I get what it's trying to do, but honestly you can sum it up better just by saying "there's more-or-less three separate stories all being told at the same time; all these stories take place at different times but they're all connected to one another in some way; you also can't axe any of them without losing something from the overall story but you also can't say that any of them are more important that the others."
Every time I've shown it to someone I've just told them roughly that and then started at Episode 2. So far no one has been confused and they've all come out of it with a very high opinion of the show overall.
I always go back and show them episode 1 after the end and they've all agreed that it's best to skip it.
