The characters don't seem right.
Ryuk seems like he really cares dropping the death note directly into his lap and even guiding him towards killing.
Light seems reluctant to kill and not a top of every field overachiever with a god complex
We haven't seen much of L but he appears to be running around a lot and not autistic.

Seriously I couldn't care less about the races of the characters and I think Ryuk looks great but nothing is right.

Rather than embracing the whole story and world, including its quirks, they instead opt to "modernize" it and make it "realistic".
They CHANGE what made it good in the first place.

You have to embrace the oddness of the story and work with it.

DB Evolution: Rather than being dragon ball, the MC was just a generic loser who was slightly stronger than a normal person and did tons of normal shit. Piccolo wasn't even piccolo.
Avatar: They completely changed bending. The big "twist" for firebending was "making fire without existing fire", or literally what every firebender in the series did.
Didn't see ghost in the shell.

You can't just take something, warp it beyond belief, and expect it to live up to the original
DmC is a great video game example. Same name, completely different game story and character wise. Outside of memes, everything is completely forgettable about the game.

Death Note will fail because Light isn't the same character as he is in the original and they'll repeatedly attempt to shoe horn him into a similar personality at one moment, only for them to change it the next. Also the black guy light is retarded.

It needed to be more of a loose adaptation. The scene that we've seen with Ryuk trying to force the deathnote into Light's hands is not Ryuk's character, it's the opposite. Willem Defoe is perfect casting for Ryuk's voice, but they should have either not shared names between characters and done their own thing, or stuck more to the characterization in the books.
