Which older titles have you gotten around to watching lately?

Recently rewatched Giant Robo + the Ginrei OVAs and shit's still as cool as ever.
>>
>>160503839
I loved GR but I just couldn't take that fucking twist seriously.
>>
Watching dunbine, honestly its really bad, the setting is great and some of the concepts are interesting but the characters are so inconsistent even by tomino standards that everything goes to waste. Characters jump between loving eachother and hating eachother within the scene and in general its essentially strips them of personality.
>>
>>160503839
Slowly going through Dirty Pair.
Some episodes are really good, but a couple of them felt really pointless, like the one about the dead scientists or whatever setting up a trap to kill Dirty Pair.
Pic related was a fantastic episode though.

The last series I watched was the 1980's Glass Mask series.

It was a really good show with a GOAT rivalry, although I feel the romantic elements could've been handled better. Is the 2005 series any better?
>>
>>160503839
>ywn more of the battles between the Experts of Justice and Big Fire
>>
Just started Slayers Revolution. Gourry seems to have a bit of his original personality back, which is nice. He was a bumbling flanderized retard for the last few seasons.
>>
Berserk 1997 again

1st episode was aesthetic as fuck coming off of the new anime, even with the stills.

Which should I watch next: RahXephon, Ideon, or Gunbuster?
>>
>>160510761
Gunbuster. If you get around to Ideon I'd advise watching the two movies over the series. Haven't seen RahXephon.
>>

Really? Why?
>>

Gunbuster is trash. Just watch Diebuster instead.

The first movie because I feel it trims alot of the fat that just aren't necessary to the story aswell as avoiding as much of Tomino's TV directing as possible. To be fair outside of MSG and Zambot 3 I haven't been impressed by Tominio's TV shows in that era at all. If you can stand stuff like Dunbine and Xabungle then sure go for the TV series. The second movie however is mandatory as it gives the series a conclusive ending, like End of Eva.
>>
>>160508239
With all the shit about 16Berserk nobody ever talks about it's awful pacing

Maybe 97 was forced by its limitations but it's slow pace gave it poignancy
>>
>>160512862
First movie trimmed too much. It should have been a trilogy with 2 recapping the series and one for the big finale.
>>
>>160513270
The trilogy treatment only goes to guaranteed hits, seen MSG. Ideon was too cult, it was lucky it managed to even get one movie. Besides, what really was lost that would justify three goddamn movies?
>>
>>160513707
it was not really so much what was lost storywise but I have a hard time seeing how anyone would care when events move so quickly

That said my memory of the series is shaky and perhaps a rewatch could change my opinion. I used to think Macross DYRL was a bad retelling of it's series until I gave it another shot a couple months ago after all
>>
>>160513955
the filler planet episodes in ideon were pretty dull
>>
God damn the subtitles for Plawres are a pain to read. Whoever translated this must've been ESL, or they translated from a language other than JP.
>>
>>160503839
Gonna go and watch Irresponsible Captain Taylor out of curiosity.
>>
Gonna watch the Patlabor films tonight or tomorrow. First time touching the franchise
>>
>>160516694

Why would you start a franchise with the movies that came out after the original series? The movies are completely different in tone because Oshii "Everything must be Ghost in the Shell" Mamoru directed them.
>>
>>160516866
because I want to watch more dour Oshii stuff, of which I haven't experienced besides GITS

though I didn't know the series came out first
>>
>>160516996
The Ova first, then the movies.
Watch the ova, it's only 7 episodes.

You have the original OVAs which are then followed by the movies.

Then you have the reboot TV series, which is followed by the New Files OVAs.

The kid and cat are both cute comedic relief.

They did a good job of making the kid not be a perfect angel child but still not having him be the most annoying thing ever.

I'm about halfway through G Gundam, after I finish it I'll probably pick up space Cobra from where I left off.

None. I used to watch them when they aired on RTL2 and Rai Uno and Due when I was a little faggot. Then I watched the rest of the good shit in the 2000s when I had good enough internet to download them.

I'm not sure if I'm envious of newfags who still have a substantial backlog or feel relief that I don't have to marathon hundreds of episodes anymore. Probably the later.

They mostly don't exist, if you mean english dubs.
Latin American dubs try since they tend to have a better talent pool for their dubs (i.e. people who have a lot more experience than the hacks used by Funimation, Sentai Filmworks, etc), but even then they have mixed results.

Last one i watched was The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

It was entertaining + i can enjoy scifi more easily.

Any suggestions on pre-2000s scifi/-ish works? Have seen Evangelion, LOGH, Nadesico, Blue Submarine, Bepop, Lain, Excel, Flcl, Now and Then, Here and There, Ryvius, Blue Gender, Gunbuster, almost every Macross, 8th MS Team - only Gundam. Probably something else too but i can't remember - i had to resort to google in order to remember some of the names.

Basically, many 90s works, couple or more of 80s. No movies here listed.

I just finished up DNA2 the other day. It was alright. The romance was kind of dumb and poorly handled, then suddenly became a fighting show for 2 episodes. Then after ep 12, in which they say the show is done, it continues for another 3 episodes to answer one previous question, but then creates many more in the process. Very eh in my opinion.

I'm going to be starting Shadow Skill soon. I've heard absolutely nothing about it until it's name just last week, but hopefully it'll be enjoyable.

That's actually the best episode in the whole show, past the one mice episode it's all downhill.

I just couldn't buy into the complete abandonment of other power sources in favour of the VERY NEW super tech in a mere 10 years. Also how did no one notice that these devices 'removed oxygen'? They had to have used them in an enclosed space for an extended period of time and noticed the lack of oxygen (just like any combustion engine, you don't use those indoors/enclosed spaces). 'Misunderstood last words/actions' was okay twist, that's just unreliable narration and some people just hate it.

It's not "unreliable narration" because you don't get told lies, simply the scene out of context leads to a misinterpretation. The human mind automatically fills the void spaces.

That's what you call great narration, if anything. The tragedy of Bashtarle is such a powerful and wonderfully directed scene, easily one of the all time best anime scenes.

It's not looking too good, anon.

-they skipped an entire story arc
-animation is worse than the old anime. I'm not exaggerating here; the CGI is horrible to put it mildly
-the combat scenes are not enjoyable due to ^
-pacing is slow
-music is really offputting compared to original series. It often does not match the mood of the scene and they often toss in metal/hard rock to showcase how "badass edgy" Guts; you will cringe

I will see it through, but only because I love the series so much.

The manga is better written overall and has more closure, even though the last several volumes turned into clusterfuck. But it portrayed the characters in less naive and more psychologically complex way. There are some cons like indecipherable action scenes, edginess, some plot points near the end seem like mangaka ran out of time to develop them, but it's the canonical Trigun story.

I feel like the criteria should be:
- released prior to 2000
- cel-animated
- when released on home video it first came out on VHS (or Laserdisc)

If it fulfills two or more of those, it's oldime.
>>
>>160554588
I watched it a million years ago when I was about 11 and had just played FFVII, expecting that but as an anime. It was bland at best and little to nothing to do with any of the games aside from the setting and Chocobos existing. It had this weird early-Nadia knockoff plot with two spunky kids trying to escape from a female villain who's essentially Grandis. It's short so you have nothing to lose except an hour or so of your life by checking it out, but don't expect much.

The second movie is literally 11/10, although you kind of have to watch the series to actually get it.
>>
>the only 1080p release of Ranma on nyaa that isn't "de-grained" has no subs
Why do so many encoders try to "fix" things?
>>
>>160560489
Your options when encoding are complete degrain (can look ok from a distance but kills all minor detail), that weird hold frame thing in the lupin bd releases, or leaving all grain in. The latter results in 3+GB files for 1080p stuff. Not that 1080p is even worth it for anime on 16mm film.

The middle ground of partially killing the grain to save filesize is actually the worst of all worlds. You just end up with blurry patches over everything and it looks terrible.

>>160561078
32mm for comparison.

I would pay for a physical BD release in the US of Minky Momo, i couldnt afford the Rayearth and CCS ones, but i want to watch Minky momo in HD, which is why streaming seems like an option, but NOPE, netflix is all mainstream shit, and Crunchyroll its all modern anime shit, and the shit they consider classics is 2000s digital anime shit and maybe Knights of the Zodiac!

Also i know the Ranma remasters had an awful instagramish tint tone on them, but are there bad?

I was thinking about that. The entire point is Vogler thought he was just going to go ahead and insert all three drives, not wreck the world with two of them.
A major theme of the series is believing in your father.
Just as Daisaku believed that he created Giant Robo for good, and Ginrei ultimately came to think Vogler made the anti-shizuma drives for good, Vogler's son thought that Vogler wanted revenge, and decided to be a good son and deliver revenge to the world as best he could without having the third drive.

Probably so. Nostalgia is like a cycle, where the current stuff "sucks", last decade was unremarkable, but 20 years ago and onward were "golden ages"

It's only a matter of time before the 2000s nostalgia wave hits and people are talking about Azumanga Daioh, Paranoia Agent, Lucky Star, Nichijou, and Haruhi with nostalgic lenses on.

A lot of tracks from mellowlink stand out to me. Honestly more memorable than some of the episodes of the show. Also not that great of an OP but possibly my favorite ED ever.

Agreed, people who say "I like retro stuff because moeblobs didn't exist!" are not seeing the full picture. Also moeblobs have been around in their modern form since at least the 90s

That's just not true. Moeblobs as they are now are pretty much, a 00s+ phenomenon. The moeblobs of the past were different.

Just finished the first episode of Megazone 23. Is this show in anyway related to Macross?
>>
>>160572690
No.
>>
>>160572690
The first episode of M23 was directed by Noboru Ishiguro, who directed Macross
>>
>>160572690
I believe Megazone 23 was originally intended to be part of the "Super Dimensional" bunch of TV anime that included Macross, but was changed to an OVA. In short, not really.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of Gamba. The characters are all familiar archetypes I've seen in anime before, and it looks familiar enough for a 70s show, until a predator appears on screen. And I'm pretty sure I've never seen a cartoon with sound quite like this before.

>>160581019
One of my faves, yeah. First arc can seem pretty slow to some people, and I know of more than a few people who hate the last act, but I personally found it to be consistently good all the way through. The not-vietnam arc in the early-middle is really long and you'll either really jive to it because it's gritty as all get out, or hate it because it goes on for quite a while.
Also this is a small thing, but it has far and away the best next episode bumps of any anime ever.
>>
>>160581205
Also when it comes to sequels, prequels, etc. it should go without saying that production order is best order, but I'll reiterate it anyway.
