Which ending? He basically killed himself by feeding his soul to the jewel because the jewel was seeking to re-empower itself by replacing the priestess and the legion within with Kagome and Naraku.

The reason people hate this ending is because it makes Naraku a pawn and disregards and muddles what he is.

Naraku is mostly a hive mind of demons led by a spider demon. Onigumo is in there obviously but his desires were well established to be utterly cucked by the demons since Naraku kept dissecting and removing pieces of him;the demons literally don't care about Onigumo's wish just their own power.

The ending however implies that the demons were basically enacting the jewel's will through an half-assed explanation and that really Onigumo was always in control or whatever. It essentially disregards that desires of all the demons in Naraku in place of what the jewel wants, which just doesn't make any sense while always mixing up who Naraku is. The show makes it REALLY apparent that Onigumo is a tiny shred of him, it's the demons who are running the show.

From my understanding, it's when to sustain a story that depends on hero vs. villain scenarios and action/fight scenes they have to keep upping the power of the villain and the protagonist.

While you can do this without technically increasing "power levels" most authors go that route so you can have things that start out as characters with very limited or niche abilities and have it end with both hero and villain throwing big blasts of energy at each other.

Nidaime didn't really have NTR, just really shitty relationship drama. The entire Madarame Harem thing is so off tone conpared to the original series and Hato was a very poor attempt at what the author must have thought was a complex character. The story became extremely meandering (there's only so much you can do with the constant relationship teasing) and most of the newly introduced characters lacked the charm and genuine energy the OG cast had.
