The real reason this is fiction, isn't because of the timelines and the body swapping, but because of how they shove love.
Real life love is much more simplistic and unepic. Maybe that's why so many people watched it.

2d love is idealised and not real. Not worth to be called as such. For you to shape your partner however you like, is oppression and totalitarianism.
Rejecting anything that doesn't fit your narrow understanding of love is evil.

I actually watched this 2 times now, one from /a/ via Chinese leaks and on cinema with shitty Kissanime tier stream quality. I still think this wasnt really that good as what most people say. It wasnt even Shinkai's best either since that throne belongs to 5cm per Second which was also an average-at-best movie flick.
>>
>>160396944
I don't know why Kimi no Na wa reminds everyone (inc. me) so much of Keit-Ai. They aren't even very similar. But for some reason, it does, and you just can't have one without the other.
>>
>>160396875
The dub version exists in that it was showing alongside the subbed version in the US, but it's not out online because the BD that's getting ripped is the Japanese release which doesn't have the dub. You might have to wait for the US release for the dub version on BD.

I think it's still worth watching the dub because in some parts the emotional impact was greater hearing the lines in your native language.
>>
>>160396344
I don't know how it went in America, but over here it didn't get the typical 2 day screening in an art house theater, it got a long, proper theatrical run at the major chains

Not even the Ghibli's have gotten that other than maybe Spirited Away, but that's long enough ago that I can't completely remember
>>
>>160396528
It honestly does not matter much, the encodes will be roughly the same other than the outliers (either the huge bloat ones or the people using h265 to make super small ones) and the subtitles will almost all be based on the same source

Just check the torrent description to see if they mention that they've messed around with the subs, that's about all that will vary

Since the other threads are devoid of discussion and full of overused memeing

The fact that they set up Mitsuha's and Taki's bond, the most important development in the film, through an AMV style 3 minute montage makes me not really care for their relationship at all, it doesn't feel believable. It felt like they barely even know each other throughout the rest of the film which caused a huge disconnect between me and the emotions of the characters
Consequently, I can't help but feel nothing during important events after the montage. Even when the credits started rolling, they felt like strangers rather than lovers to me.

Because they were. They may have retained some subconscious trace of their experience together but to all ends and purposes they were starting from scratch. Another anon phrased this better but it's love at first sight.

>Because they were. They may have retained some subconscious trace of their experience together but to all ends and purposes they were starting from scratch. Another anon phrased this better but it's love at first sight.
I meant that they ALWAYS felt like strangers and I never felt that emotional connection that they've supposedly felt, even at the end of the movie.

Like, even during the scene where they met for this time on top of that mountain, they still felt like strangers to me. I think there was potential in the scenes where they help with each other's lives, like with the bullying or trying to get Taki close to the waiter, and that's something I think the movie should have focused much more on that rather than having the comet at all.

This is a valid criticism for the movie. Probably the biggest one. Though I didn't even notice really the first time. It was kind of like when you're having fun with a friend and one day you realize you've fallen in love. It made me empathize with Taki during the date scene when Senpai said he was in love with someone else. Because I didn't realize either that Taki and Mitsuha were in love, but at that moment it made sense. That's what I think Taki was feeling at the time. Dunno, that's just what I got out of it.

I agree with you though, Shinkai made a big mistake in glossing over the development of the relationship, but maybe it was just to preserve the balance between the first half and the second half.

ok, so you want me to do every single frame of this sequence? also as far as key frames... like the ones in the OP like pic related? im also working on an android homescreen for the film as im posting these, if you wanna maybe check it out when im finished
>>
>>160397518
I think the actual disaster elements of the film with the comet was fine, its not my cup of tea but it wasn't that bad, its just a little disappointing to go from a more character driven experience in the first half, setting up a couple interesting points, then brushing it all under the rug through a few minute montage and turning around to focus on something else that really isn't about the characters anymore when I really only watch an anime for the characters.

There are a couple gems of development throughout the film though, like Taki learning to not be so self-centered and pay attention to things around him, and Mitsuha learning to stand up for herself.

That's an interesting perspective, and I'm definitely with you about the character driven elements. But I think in movies you kind of have to have some sort of plot driven elements, it's not like a TV anime where the viewer only has to pay attention for 20 minutes. There needs to be some sort of plot device to keep the audience hooked. If the whole movie would have been solely character focused, like 5cm/s, I don't think it would've had as much mass appeal. Not saying 5cm/s is bad, just that it was a different formula, which is not as popular sadly. You can definitely tell Shinkai was going for something that would appeal to the most number of people.

Why is Taki more of a tomboy when pretending to be Mitsuha than he acts when he's just himself? As Mitsuha he goes around with a shit eating grin on his face all the time and does wacky things like kicking chairs, riding bikes, and carpentry. When he's Taki he doesn't do any of those things. Taki!Mitsuha doesn't feel like Taki at all.
>>
>>160399919
Nobody knows who he is, so why doesn't he just act the way he may want to?
>>
Not a great movie, twist was apparent from the first time they showed how they communicated to each other.
Music was overused to the point where it was forcefully trying to elicit an emotional response from the viewer.
Art style was phenomenal, as expected from a project with Makoto Shinkai.
The writing was awkward. The characters kept on repeating the same words over and over in their head which was jarring. Though the humorous bits redeem it a bit, it's still in anime levels of writing..
People really should stop hyping movies to high heavens and giving them 10/10 as has been the case when looking through the threads discussing this movie.

2/5, a severely disappointing movie.

The plot is just overall not that interesting. There's no interesting build up, just a bunch of rug pullers that are entertaining if you don't see it coming.
I don't want to spoil you by giving you examples, but quite a few times did the actions of the characters felt pretty contrived for the sole sake of driving the plot.

not him but anyone who's consumed a fair amount of media will be able to tell that some elements are just badly chosen. an example that stuck with me is when they went to itomori and it finally settled that the town did get destroyed. taki took out his cell to look at mitsuha's diary and suddenly all entries become corrupted. there's no real reason for this to happen, even if the entries remained there's no proof someone else wrote them.

another good example is shinkai's insistence to turn the climax into a musiv video. i can also argue that the limited interaction mitsuha and taki had doesnt really convince you that they are soulbound

Yeah it's a paradox.
She dies in the meteor strike -> Taki goes to shrine-underworld-tree thing -> they interact -> she survives
However if she survives, 3 years in the future Taki will have no reason to visit the shrine thingy and therefore they don't interact and she dies to the meteor.

Everything between them meeting up on the ridge and the actual end when they meet up again just feels like its there because it has to be there. There's no real point to it, they could have just as easily skipped all of it and you'd basically lose nothing. It's foregone conclusion that they'll succeed in saving the townspeople because that's the entire fucking point. What actually happens is irrelevant. The point is that the two of them meeting is the catalyst, and their efforts are rewarded when fate brings them together again in the end.

Best/only logical way for the movie to work is consider two alternative timelines splitting from one at the point they interacted with each other. Like disappearance did.

You know, I really want to like Shinkai's work here, since he and his team obviously put forward such a monumental effort. But in the end I never could make any type of connection with them.

Nah there's a point to it. It's a social commentary on the disconnect between city japan and countryside japan and how easy it is to forget seemingly significant events like natural disasters. Taki remembers his obsession with Itomori but doesn't know why and the world moves on as if also forgetting. During his interviews Taki states he wants to make buildings that are memorable since even Tokyo could be spontaneously wiped off the map. That gets lost on western viewers though.
>fate brings them back together again
Fate didn't bring them back together, why do people keep saying this?
>>
>>160404166
Oh, that makes sense. Americans like me never experience natural disasters unless you count the retards in New Orleans. Japs experience Typhoons and Tsunamis seemingly multiple times a decade, so it makes sense.

.sup files are basically timed image files. You have to OCR them to do anything with them. If you want to get text subtitles to edit, [Nii-sama] and [MTBB] have some.

There are lots of natural disasters that take lives every year. But they are usually on the local or statewide scale at most. Tornadoes in the midwest, wildfires and mudslides in California, hurricanes in the Gulf, snow storms in the northeast.

I don't know how to describe it technically, but VLC has always had trouble rendering anime encodes which results in visual errors and artifacts. I figured they must have improved it sometime in the last decade, so I downloaded VLC on a computer to show off Kimi no Na wa yesterday and lo and behold it's just as shitty as ever. Half of the screen was fucked up within the first minute.

Yeah one of the common given reasons as to why it was so big in Japan was because of the similarities between the meteor and the 2011 earthquake. First, it can't cache video well, which results in broken rendering sometimes, see pic. Second, it needs font cache which takes time, I don't like waiting a minute or two before watching an episode. Third, limited range of brightness, instead of rendering 0-255 it renders 16-235 which makes colors look washed out.

What strikes me as remarkable is how the bodyswapping is portrayed in the film to be the set-up for love, but not the guaranteed maker. Mitsuha and Taki find out about each other through the bodyswaps, and they are able to guess each other's personalities through the situation in their lives, the people's reactions to them, and even their own text messages/body marks telling them what to do. However, they never could go/look into the one thing that makes their other them, which is their souls, and that makes them curious about how each other really feels and thinks about each other. Taki deeply respects the kuchikamisake as Mitsuha's literal half, though Mitsuha herself doesn't really see the same way out of a "disgusting maiden tradition" pact. Both of them travel outside of their comfort zones (as in, the homes where their physical bodies belong) in order to search for the other body, but moreso, the other soul. Mitsuha wasn't satisfied enough with finding Taki's body on a train when he wasn't even the Taki (17) that she wanted to see, and thus couldn't bare to start a conversation as a stranger. The two yearn to meet each other's selves and that's what the Twilight Hour did in part with correcting the bodyswaps: making them be themselves and see their other as themselves in order for them to act on their love to one another (Taki writing "I love you" and Mitsuha receiving back the 3-year-older hair braid).

Overall, the love blossomed from their curiosity and interest in what makes them Taki/Mitsuha and what makes the other Mitsuha/Taki, and through the journey and discovery, they realize they need each other in their lives because they want to be connected as who they are.

>>

>>
>>160406385

>>
>>160406495
That was the assumption, because originally she was half-expecting to be in Taki's body and go on the date with sempai instead of Taki being Taki. She made preparations in case he did (and does) go on the date, but then in her own self, she realized how much Taki meant to her in what she knows about him and doesn't know. Her tears and sadness might also be correlated to Taki's previous bodyswap where he placed her kuchikamisake in the shrine and held a fear that "he was dreaming", which she probably holds a fear/worry for, too.

>>160406679
Extending on that, but if it is true that Mitsuha shed tears because of a mixture of her own feelings + Taki's own tears following the previous bodyswap, then there's a strong indication that Mitsuha is able to see a lot into Taki's life on her own as much as Taki did during the dream-like flashback on Mitsuha's entire life.

Is this maybe Mitsuha's gift of being a Miyamizu descendent + shrine maiden? Maybe her feminine instincts kicking in to explore every aspect of Taki's life (she visits his dad at work, hangs out with his friends, talks to people openly)? Or is it just the observant fact that Taki's history is less complicated and more bland than Mitsuha's?

I really enjoyed it and I'll buy the blu-ray when it's released in the States. Im glad the movie lived up to the hype I've been constantly hearing for the past year. I was prepared to get so angry when I thought it was gonna go for a 5 cm per sec ending. Well I just watched it. It didn't make me feel as sad and empty as I thought it would, based on what I'd heard, and it didn't trigger as much loneliness as I was expecting; probably because I had a lot of fun watching it and I was happy at the ending and satisfied with it. Pretty good movie, will re-watch.

What film strip did you get? I was pretty disappointed with mine Just the bros hanging out.

>>160411672
Eh, that's so blatant I have a hard time thinking that it's NOT actually an homage. Though, that said, Nijiro Hotaru has a lot in common with KNNW, Shinkai probably took some ideas.

But Nijiro Hotaru is just a Jiro Taniguchi ripoff. No one is original anymore, haven't been for centuries.

>>160397173
>>160397518
Yeah, the romance really wasn't that great. The characters didn't exactly interact a ton, and the nuances of the when they do let a little chemistry flow are obscured by the Zenzenzense montage - which to me was a terrible decision.

That said, I GET why people love the romance so much. Because they love the characters. This movie does a fantastic job of characterization in the first quarter of the movie, seriously. Rarely does a film like this get you to care about both the romantic leads so quickly. As much as I love films like Whispers of the heart or Omoide Pororo, let's be honest, they're character studies of the girl. The male love interest is bland as a cardboard cutout. Taki and Mitsuha are so interesting, and so compatible, that the audience starts to ship them before the movie even does.

Even if the romance isn't really that well developed, I'd rather watch two characters I like interact a little, rather than boring, dull leads make googly eyes for two hours. To be fair, though, how often does an anime film do a romantic subplot better than this?

And that's the key, subplot. Romance in KNNW is as relevant as it is in Kiki. It's not the driving theme behind the narrative, it's a vehicle to help develop characters and make the broader themes Shinkai is presenting, about generation gaps and proactive living, more palatable.

>through an AMV style 3 minute montage

The problem with this is that it isn't showing the different "I" uses.
It swaps between Taki and Mitsuha's POVs on that page several times. You might not pick out that both Mitsuha and Taki are reciting that "Just a little longer".

I don't think you can divest the disaster elements from the characterization. While I wouldn't call this Sekai-kei, the characters are inextricably tied to their world. The film isn't about the disaster, not really. That's why the climax doesn't involve an evacuation or anything. Rather, it's about how the comet changes the characters. That's why, when Mitsuha confronts her father, we see no more of her. Her arc is complete, the change in her character has occurred, everything else is a formality.

>>
>>160397173
I think they were just using that to get the body swap cliches out of the way as quickly as possible to get to the twist, which is where the film comes into it's own.

You could add another half hour to the runtime to flesh that part out but it wouldn't accomplish much. I've seen that shit a dozen times before.

>What exactly was Taki doing when he looked for Mitsuha and visited the town?
Everything up to the Takayama ramen shop would have been the same, he would have found out/remembered about the comet but instead of it being a disaster that killed hundreds of people, no one died.

This is probably why he forgot stuff so quickly afterward and why Okudera says that it seems like she has forgotten a lot. Musubi did some memory wiping to help prevent any issues.
