As such, we can assume that the protection afforded by armor was more than adequate without the added protection of a shield.

Even a horde of small goblins can swarm someone. There could always be a stronger goblin among them even in Chapter 1's cave. What if I encounter a strong goblin? Those seem to exist. On one hand, it's possible to be killed by it & looted. On the other hand, it's possible to kill it & loot it. If I bring a stronger weapon, it raises my chances of that victory & both putting an end to a threat. If I bring poor equipment, I both risk death & said strong goblin still exists in that case. It's like the goal isn't to slay the monster but to weaken myself so I can't.

I'm pretty sure a gob champ died this chapter BECAUSE it had no good equipment. It lacked protective armor, and its weapon was a club. Just saying, I think GS' tactic is in-character but not out of pragmatism. I see it as the result of a fearful and paranoid person who's deeply traumatized by his encounters. I think you guys overlooked the fact that GS is fighting one against a mob. In a one on one battle, having familiar, high grade weapons does play an important role. However when you are fighting against multiple low level mobs, your weapon tends to get gunked up by the fats and blood of the dead, decreasing the slicing and cutting capabilities of the weapon. When you don't have time to clean or maintain them, or don't have a self-maintaining and repairing weapon, it's best not to just rely on one throughout the mob battle. Picking up dropped weapons that are damaged but relatively unused is a good tactic at this point. Jack of all Weapons, Master of None is the way to go when you're up against low level mobs without a reusable area of effect weapon.

He's far from lvl 20. He is experienced but by no means some demigod. There comes a time where things just become bullshit which anyone at the table would complain about.

weapons =/= equipment, so that's already a misunderstanding there. My standpoint has always been GS isn't someone who relies on the perfect weapon to get out of the situation. He adapts and plan for things using the environment, his experience and he prepares equipment in his bag for unforeseen stuff as best as he cans. His style of using dropped weapons is an example of how he adapts to the situation instead of relying on fixed weapons.

A Dm lets his players get away with too much can be bad too. Worse, a Dm who actively allowed his dmpc to get away with things can be bad, I've seen some times where it's really bad.
