They watered down the quality.
It's like how cold cuts used to be defined as having 12% water added. But over the years, lobbyists convinced the FDA to now allow cold cut definition to include up to 30% water added. It's why also the protein count dropped from as much as 7gm (34gm slice decades ago) to now be 4gm protein per 28gm slice.
