It gets worse for the dad in the spinoff. He always thought he was in control of his life in deciding to abandon the Miyamizus and doing some actual good for the town by becoming the mayor, but upon Mitsuha coming to him for help, he realizes that him becoming the mayor (and probably his love for Futaba) has been predetermined by musubi all for the sake of saving everyone from the meteor. He really gets the short end of the stick.

He really does give hope in 22+ year-olds to get off the forever-alone spectrum and search for their soulmates while they are enjoying life. I actually feel much more social and hopeful just thinking back to this film.

Man fuck that.

I just finished watching the movie, and I'm a bit unsatisfied with how we never get to see the "aftermath" of things. I was kind of hoping that Taki would say Sayaka and that guy's name and make them bewildered. Was kind of praying the novels would put out an epilogue but for some reasons Japs hate epilogues.

Believe it or not, Teacher and Shoedude got the second best ending of Shinkai's main couples, because there's possibility. (Taki and Mitsuha were the luckiest.) The man has got a mad boner for depressing-as-hell endings, which is what made the ending of Your Name so surprising for me.

Yeah, yeesh. I'm still not man enough to rewatch 5cm.

But where is the musubi?
And it makes no sense to go backwards. Mitsuha going forwards makes sense because if she went to a point after the comet hit then she could potentially learn about it and try to save the village, but going backwards even if they learn about the comet they won't know which comet because they won't know, they won't know the orbital period because they don't know.

It's worse than useless. All it did was give Yotsuha a chance to grope herself.

There's other questions it raises.

Were all the previous body swaps in the Miyamizu family because they drank some of their own spit sake?
Then how did Mitsuha and Taki's body swaps happen when it was just the cord linking them?
Were they all one off events, like Yotsuha's, instead of month long like Mitsuha's?

>>160285861
I don't think the bodyswaps happen solely because of the spit-sake drinking per-say. Mitsuha made a wish that triggered the bodyswapping, after all. The main conditions for the swap is that one person has to be a Miyamizu descendant while the other can be from a different time than the former. Perhaps by drinking her own sake, Yotsuha connected with someone who shared her DNA, which can only lead to the past instead of the future because at that point no one else shares her spit.

These are just my two cents, so I'm very likely wrong.
>>
>>160286033
>Mitsuha made a wish that triggered the bodyswapping, after all.
Na, she had bodyswapped before the wish.

We saw Taki's side of the first bodyswap before she made the wish, we didn't see Mitsuha's side (remember Tak's father telling him to go to school even if he is late).

She also had a vague memory of it while at school after Taki's day in her.

Maybe I really overhyped this for myself, with the mal rating and normalfags raving about it, but it seemed just ok.
>>
>>160286625
There are two ways to answer this, really.

One is the "simple" answer, which just takes everything at face value and doesn't really bother with analysis. That answer is "it could have happened to anyone of that age; whoever it happened to would have become the protagonist, ergo the fact that it happened to Taki made him the protagonist".

The second answer is "he was the likeliest to be able to take the steps required to help Mitsuha save the village".

Let's consider Taki for a bit.

>He's pretty damn confident.
>He's pretty hot-headed and easily agitated, as indicated by his boss, his friends, and his early interactions with Mitsuha.
>He's diligent and hard-working, as indicated by his dedication to his work and his willingness to go the extra mile to build or create fun things for Mitsuha's friends - despite not being the one to stand to benefit from the in the long run.
>He's helpful and loyal, as he makes a point to make Mitsuha stand up for herself when her classmates are whispering about her due to her father's shenanigans. He also gives Mitsuha's grandmother aid in traveling despite having no real connection to her.
>He's extremely dedicated and determined, as indicated by the arguably unreasonable lengths that he goes to to track down Mitsuha after their connection is severed.

These are all desirable traits for somebody who was to be Mitsuha's "counterpart". Mitsuha, among other things, is lacks self-confidence when not with people that she is comfortable with.

It could be believed that Taki was "chosen" by fate, or the god behind the ritual, because he would be able to help Mitsuha. A timid or apathetic person would not be able to help Mitsuha, as they would have either lacked the initiative to "stand up for her" while in her body, or wouldn't have cared to track her down after their connection was severed.

The answer, then, would be "Taki was chosen because he was right one for the job."

>>160282736
How bad are the official subs? I want to watch it again and show it to my family but I'd rather wait if someone's doing them.
>>
>>160288079
They were translated in the version I watched. The headlines were questioning how "he knew" that Tiamat split and destroy Itomori, questioned his "hidden motives", and basically implied that he must have known in advance but didn't share the info until right before due to some shadowy agenda.
>>
>>160287761
>...Or a stable time loop.
Stable time loops can be paradoxes, especially in this case if the cord is the reason why she body swapped with Taki.

Taki only gets the cord because body swapping with him leads her to go to Tokyo where she meets him three years before HE experienced body swapping with her.

She body swaps with him -> He gets the cord -> She body swaps with him

It's a loop that you can't find your way into.

Now that's not to say that it wasn't just the god that was picking it, like you said, picking someone suitable for the job, but it isn't really defined in such a way that you can point to a definitive answer. I feel, though, that considering the major theme of musubi, and the cord being shown as a link between them (when she hands it to him, when they are running past each other on top of the mountain) that the cord is the connection that makes THEM body swap.

Ah, fudge. Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as saying that you were wrong and that the time loop wasn't a paradox. "...Or a stable time loop." was meant to be an add-on to what I said; basically, quoting you, then saying "...Or what he said." I didn't have much more room to clarify, as I'd just hit the character limit.

And that's a very viable interpretation. I hadn't actually considered it myself, but it makes as much sense and is arguably more fitting. As you said, it can't really be "determined", but what's the fun of getting all that stuff spoonfed to us? Let's theorize and think about it.

If you paid attention as the beginning then it would probably have been more obvious that they would have a meeting at the end.

Starting the movie with "there's someone I am searching for. Some unique person I have to find" and just covering the "why" they have that feeling and not having them meet would have been worse than anything he had done before.
From a pure storytelling standpoint it would have been dumb.

Anime BDs are usually use basic protection measures. They don't really go out of their way to prevent ripping like other releases do. But BD standards have a minimum encryption standard so it will depend on what has been compromised.

The nice thing about the movie ending like it did is that it leaves it open for each viewer to make up their own epilogue. Did they remember everything right there on the stairs? Did it take a while? Did they have to retrace their steps first? Did they never really remember? Did they get together? Did it last? I kind of like being left to answer these questions on my own.

I would lean more towards this.
The memories were the price they paid for the meeting on the mountain. Regaining them would make that pointless.

After all, they met that one unique person they had to find. Saying the relationship didn't take off or didn't last would be too realistic.

Why do you guys like this movie? I thought /a/ would be more insightful than this.

It's a 7/10 movie at best. I'd put it more like 6 or a 6.5.
It's above average, but it's far from remarkable.

It's a movie with a contrived plot to facilitate more heavy-handed melodrama from Shinkai. The animation, while technically impressive, is stylistically uninteresting.

Either she felt like she could be tougher if she were a boy (which is plausible, as her getting stronger due to her association with Taki is one of her strongest bits of character development), or she just plucked it out of nowhere due to her memories of her first body-swap with Taki.
>>
>>160294572
What do you consider a 10/10 anime movie?
>>
>>160294572
There are a lot of little things in the movie which are really nice touches. Things that aren't spelled out to you that you can realize when you think about it.

It's not like the greatest theatrical piece ever conceived, but it speaks to a lot of people but you can get invested in the characters and want them to save the village and meet again.

I can't convince you to like it but I would rank it very good.

Also, the musical score is perfect.

I don't consider Tenshi no Tamago to be a 10/10. It's probably a 9/10 for me though.
It has such a creative setting and interesting visuals, the atmosphere is top-notch. It's a very artistic movie, intended to convey the creator's sentiments, particularly on religion.

It's inspired in a way Kimi no na Wa and its forceful melodrama could never hope to be.

It's such a haunting movie.
It's been many years since I've seen it, but I still vividly remember the scene with the ghostly men from the ruined town hunting the shadows of fish.

I guess Mitsuha's friends then. Just like how Mitsuha's dad (in the spinoff) feels that his life is predestined to support the teenagers' plan to evacuate the townspeople, I feel that is the same case for Tessie and Sayaka. Tessie who happens to be the son and underling worker for Mitsuha's dad's contractor, and Sayaka who happens to be in the school's broadcasting radio club with connections to a sister in a higher league. A lot of the factors have pre-existed to support Taki's plan to save everyone within less than half a day's time.

I don't mind it because it does show how the miracles of life function through the wider sense of things, but some have felt that the "predestined" notion clashes with the themes that the film is conveying.
>>
>>160296857
Even more so, Teshigawara actually hated the town too, but not in the same was as Mitsuha and Sayaka of wanting to leave it behind, but rather he kinda wished it would be destroyed so he could rebuild it better.

But then why was he dicking around in Tokyo eight years later? I can see the village being blocked off three years after still because there would be a lot of clean up work that would have to be done any construction could happen, but eight years later? He shoulda been there building houses.
>>
Shinkai you sly dog.
>>
>>160296997
I guess it depends entirely on how the Itomori council decides to do with the remains of the town, since many of the survivors have moved on to other cities and most likely staying there. Tessie could be working on projects to build new structures (maybe even coincidentally working with Taki under architecture), but I guess he's more occupied with marriage plans for Sayaka.

Two strangers asking if they met before, shed tears to show their release from loneliness into happiness, and asking for the names they longed to remember. You (the audience) don't get to see how this will entwine, but deep down you hope it will blossom into a relationship that rejuvenates the fun times of the first half of the film and even expand beyond it. Truly an emotional cinematic moment that just wraps the film up with hopes and fulfillment simultaneously.

It fits the motif of change. Until Taki met Mitsuha, he was quite docile, content to go with the flow and leave things be. You can see how he breaks out of that shell during body swap shenanigans, and his further evolution during his pilgrimage to the crater. It all culminates to this scene.

That's what makes the love story aspect of the film interesting compared to most anime. Because they only have one brief face to face moment over all the time they're spending in one another's lives, they learn about each other through the perspectives of those around them, see what's good and what's lacking, and demonstrate their growing affection by moving away from simply trying not to make a mess to making an effort to help one another. By the time they meet at twilight, each knows very well that the other cares for them a lot.
>>
>>160299679
He is, and his more bold and outgoing personality is what helps him improve Mitsuha's social standing. He scares off the people that she would normally allow to laugh at her in class and even gets at least one guy to confess to her. His senpai from work finds his demeanor a bit too masculine, which is why she only likes him when Mitsuha is inhabiting him.
>>
Great, now I can see how Shinkai is a fucking hack and used CG for multiple parts of the movie.
>>
>>160299679
>>160299789
But that's the thing, you only see this bold and aggressive side while in Mitsuha's body. Taki seems to be quite passive in his relationships, in comparison to his career aspirations. It's clear he never got close to his senpai from work, and seemed content to stay on the sidelines just watching. Add to the fact that he couldn't even hold simple conversations during the date.

Honestly the reaction really seems to imply that they aren't really feeling a strong connection to the movie. It's a compensating over reaction if you will.

Maybe it's social commentary about Japanese men? Not even baiting, the cultural habits of Japanese men, and women, are usually overlooked compared to the work environment of Japan. They are very passive compared to other cultures, I'd say possibly the most.

Probably that if they really knew the other person from somewhere then the other person would say something.
Problem was that neither of them knew that both of them didn't remember and both were having the feeling that there was someone special they had to meet.

In the LN though they both turn around at the same time. In the movie you get the impression that if Taki didn't turn around Mitsuha would have kept walking and that would have been it.

It was good, probably the best Shinkai film I've seen, I had fun and laughed a lot but I don't think it'll stick with me. I agree with you in part, the movie didn't need to be completely changed to match the LN. They're different mediums and it's fine.

However, I prefer the way the meeting is done in the LN, with both of them not being able to stand the idea of letting the moment pass and turning around, rather than the impression that they would have kept walking and regretted everything if Taki hadn't been the one to take initiative.

I found the movie's story past part 1 to be pretty weak. The LN improved on a lot of stuff; in part 3 for example, MC's moved on but ends up hitting a rough spot in life and begins thinking back to his childhood love. I believe the manga also has a lot more story involving the girl from Part 2.

Speaking of 5 cm, it's interesting how many similarities there were between part 3 and the last 5 minutes of Kimi no na wa.

Why? They gave those up when they met on the mountain. Getting them back would make that worthless.

I think it is fine stopping where he did. The story was about the path to them meeting again, meeting that unique person they had to find, and it ended when they reached that point.
Maybe have a supplementary work that explores the afterward, but this story is complete.

They had no memories of the bodyswapping, at all, none of it.
Taki forgot everything. He didn't know why he went to Itomori at all. He didn't know why he drew pictures of Itomori. He even said he didn't know anyone in Itomori.

They had a stronger bond than the grandmother remembered (mind you it happened for her like 60 years prior so that wouldn't have helped in its own right).

Another thing, if Earthbound is truly canon then the grandmother's experience was far less than Mitsuha and Taki. Yotsuha tried some of her kuchikamizake and had one bodyswap experience with an ancestor a thousand years before which lasted a short time, about the length of the かたわれ時 scene probably, she returned after twilight, but the person she met on the other side recognized her as "dreaming" because she (the person she had body swapped into) had drunk some of her own kuchikamizake. So, if canon, that was a known thing back a thousand years before.

Watching it in the theatre was great. I could hear/see people's reactions and it was pretty funny recollecting them.

During the Kataware-doki moment, people were fucking crying. I saw a guy and his girlfriend in front of me, wipe his face when the two met, the girl was sobbing.

When the pen dropped and Mitsuha dissappeared, there was a collective "No!" from the audience.

When Mitsuha finally opened her hand and it said "I love you", I could hear depressed murmurs around.

The bridge scene? Oh god that was the point I think where people were exhausted emotionally. I could hear "Why?!" or "Please, please" during that time.

The finale was the best, when Mitsuha and Taki's eyes met, people fucking cheered. You could hear some "delighted sobbing" or some shit like that.

THEN THE STAIRS SCENE HAPPENED. This was like the noisiest moment, the previous parts were just like somehow loud murmurs, this scene people just went like "No no no!" and it was kinda heard around the theater.

In the final scene when they finally faced each other properly, cheers were abound. Title drop, and clapping. When the lights went up, you could see people trying to remove tears from their eyes.

10/10 it was a fun ride. Well it was fun for me because I finally get to see a Shinkai good ending after 15 years.

>>160288545

Some memers made up a meme called Keit-ai which is a romance meme revolving around cellphones and parallel worlds.

Ever since the meme took off they try to take over anything popular that vaguely relates to the meme. They use cellphones in Kimi no na wa, it's basically Keit-ai! They are in different timelines, it's basically Keit-ai! etc

I didn't like it. The first third was enjoyable, but then the plot became absurd for melodrama's sake.

This. The movie acknowledges this, as we often see different days of the week but the same date. There's also Taki dressing for school as Mitsuha when it turns out to be the weekend. There's a lot of attention to detail in the background and in how parts of the story fit together to make it an oversight. They just decided to go with it and folded it into the way the switches work. Also, if the differences in years were too great then the tech would give it away and it would make them meeting up in the end a bit more awkward for the average viewer.

It's a bit of a copout for people who aren't as with the concept to just go "well it was essentially a dream for them so they didn't notice or forgot details," but that's what it amounts too. Some cuts reinforce this, with Taki cutting away from that same weekend day as Mitsuha the moment the grandmother says he's dreaming, just like as if he was in a dream and being jolted awake by the realization. Even though, logically speaking, he didn't return to his body until he went to sleep later that evening and then woke up the next day.

I thought it was okay. Better than 5cm/s second but still far from great.
The melodrama is ridiculously contrived.

Everyone I've spoken to in real life who has seen the movie his given it a middling review, from older coworkers to children. And yet I know it's the best selling anime film of all time. It's hard to reconcile these pieces of information.

there's a copypasta meme created by /a/ that's supposed to summarize romantic anime subplots

>A boy falls in love with a girl.
>Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl’s phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
>But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
>Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

/a/ assumed this would be applicable to "Your Name" and, being the turboautists they are, started photoshopping it into the art and bringing up the pasta whenever people tried to discuss the upcoming movie

mind you this was before anyone knew what the plot was, they just assumed the movie was going be generic as shit and follow the formula. As we found out, it wasn't applicable at all, in fact it's almost completely wrong

being the counter culture hipster faggots they are, they just kept spamming the meme irregardless of how much it didn't actually apply. They were determined to derail threads for whatever autistic reason you pick (being Miyazaki fanboys, hating how popular it was with normies, hating the fact that a romantic anime movie was good, etc.)

It was impossible to discuss this movie on /a/ for months.because of those faggots

What the fuck, you guys weren't kidding about the glaring plot holes

How the fuck Taki not know about the HUGE disaster that killed 500 people? They remembered the time they swapped bodies, so their memory wasn't fucked with yet.
How did Taki not know they name of the town he spent literal weeks in?
They were literally going through each other's calendars, how did they not notice the date?
How did they even meet on top of that mountain? None of this shit is explained.
Why did Mitsuha even throw her braided cord thing at Taki? It doesn't even make sense?
How did they even fall in love with each other? They don't even know each other, only the circumstances in which they lived.
How does a comet really far away, obviously moved past the Earth already, split and hit the Earth? Even if it split way before it was past Earth, it was obviously being heavily tracked and the town would have been evacuated by then.

Talk about all style and no substance.

But it was. People have always been promiscuous, even in the puritanical Middle Ages.

And with this I'm not saying it's wrong to stay with one person for the rest of your life, but full monogamy is just so high a standard it's dumb to demonize other behaviors.

That "spark" is a culmination of random experiences and expectations that you gained while growing up. Its not random at all. People are like puzzle pieces, some just fit better with others.

I know it's hard for you to believe, but promiscuity rates really HAVE gone up, and by a lot too. That's what the whole sexual revolution was about. When society had standards and you would be shamed for it, people were able to resist their libidos. It is a high standard these days, especially without the aid of social consensus, but in the past most families stayed together for life. Demonizing someone for not meeting a standard is the explicit purpose of standards to begin with, that's why you can feel shame.

I will never understand why people get married quickly. Not only do you need the honeymoon phase to pass but you need to see how someone changes. People aren't static, we are always growing and becoming something different. Only after a few years can you finally see who someone is, that true self and how they walk their path. People that meet and marry in months are marrying a frame of the movie reel which is their partner and which will not stay.

Eleanor Rigby is uncharacteristically dark for him, he never went to that territory again, but Hey Jude is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about, it's a giant weepy pick-me-up. Again, I'd stress that I'm not attacking him or his work by saying this. Martha My Dear is probably a Top 5 Beatles tune for me.

>>160315880
I think romanticism can be thanked for that. I've read somewhere that you don't truly know a person unless you've been with them for at least two years.

>implying an authentic and historical setting is bad
>implying not having tropes is bad

>implying normalfags would enjoy a historical movie
Exit yourself

Uhh, yeah, a straightforward historical drama has more normie appeal than a genderbending time-swap story with a pop-rock OP and numerous boob-grab gags. How is this even debatable? I saw both movies in the theater. I know which one I would be more comfortable taking my parents to.
>>
>>160315027
Why the fuck are you comparing a flick to a film?
In This Corner isn't supposed to appeal to the mass public, unlike Kimi no na wa.

I didn't tear up but fuck I really got into the drama.

>>160316262
Stop posting, seriously.
You clearly have no idea what any of those terms mean neither understand what those movies are about.

I didn't say they can't fluctuate. And just because a standard exists at one point in time doesn't mean it actually reflects human nature or it's the ideal one.

Goodbye thread. You are mostly good this time around and I'm grateful for that.

no, popular british film critic and self-confessed feminist/trotskyist Mark Kermode was a huge fan of the film
