Becoming disillusioned with western media.
It took me several attempts to finally get into anime. I think I went through TTGL, SAO, and SnK before I finally found my place as a mechafan
>>
I understand the hate with """"blogshit"""" threads. For one, they were never hated before the whole influx of other sites' user coming here for anonymity. Secondly, they are far less cancerous than what goes on it any of the pseudo-generals on /a/.

I watched a ton of animated stuff since before I can remember. And I was always really interested in it. But I noticed very early on that some of the designs in stuff like the video games I played and stuff like Sonic or Little Nemo were different from most cartoons.

A few years down the line, I learned about Sailor Moon was from Japan and everything just clicked. From then on, I searched for every anime product I could find, even going to chinatown and buying bootleg tapes/posters. And it became my obsession all through the 1990s and up to today.

Sneaking out of my bedroom in the early 2000's so I could watch reruns of cowboy bebop and Eva on toonami. I would put a towel under the tv room door so the light and noise wouldn't get out. I was in elementary school at the time so I would have gotten in a shit load of trouble for watching "mature" stuff like that. Later on when I was in middle school Cartoon Network did "month of Miyazaki" which got me back into it. I remember I started watching 240p anime with yellow hardsubs on YouTube, back before the big copyright purges of 2008/2009.

God, I miss 2000-2007.

Dragon Ball Z. Watched it when i was really young and really loved it still my favorite show nostalgia goggles are too strong. I have watched some anime as a 6 year old that was not appropriate for 6 year old; Tiger Mask, Daimos, stuff like that. My interest in anime was kind of dormant until I saw Death Note. Fully reactivated after watching TTGL.

On a side note, since we're already in blogshit territory, why do all IT guys have such a shit taste in anime? Is it because they're unable to grasp the intricacies of human nature and gravitate towards stuff that gives them illusion of understanding people or something like that?

Because it was cooler than what I ever saw on Saturday mornings besides Batman: the animated series.

First anime I ever saw was the edited version of New dominion tank police on sci fi one early Saturday at my older sisters house. Then what comes on after? the third ova to Iria: Legend of Zerum.

Got me hooked after My aunt lent me the dubbed version or Record of the loddoss war. She had all six ovas.

Then I picked up the Fist of the north star movie and that what got me and my best friend into body building. He thought it was just a "fucken cartoon" then he saw Ken squeeze that guys head like and orange and he said "fuckin awesome!"

I miss him.

I hate how everyone pretends anime fans had the same experience as you.
I had no (close) friends growing up but certainly wasn't bullied. After that I got a job, re-invented myself, became even more self-hating, and abandoned such a normalfag-ish lifestyle to pursue consuming anime and other interesting media.
>>
I saw a bunch of people on /v/ making off topic threads about Kill la Kill, so I watched it to see what all the fuss was about and I enjoyed it.

Then I watched every other Trigger anime, then Gainax, then Shinichiro Watanabe stuff.
>>
>>160246884
I'd expect an IT guys to be smart enough to understand 'all' didn't mean 100% of the populace, but oh well.
Maybe that's the thing? Love for numbers, flowcharts and technicalities? I have no ill will, mind you. Just hoped to find the root of the problem so that I could help them acquire better taste.
>>
>>160247049

"All" doesn't mean 100% of the populace? Your fucking words.

You think it's possible for a single person to meet and know all the people from a certain group? Maybe if it was some small pool, like 'all members of a band X', but surely no normal person would jump to conclusion that it means every single IT guy on Earth. Come on.
See? That's what I'm talking about. Good with numbers, but really bad with words.
>>
I hate responding to threads with newfag OPs.
>>
>>160247260

Then maybe you shouldn't have used a noun which implies all members of a population. Then you offer the line "...but really bad with words".

Jesus, but you're tiresome.

Let us look at the original statement:

>why do all IT guys have such a shit taste in anime?

Right. If 'all' is figurative, metaphoric, or some weird artistic simile known better to yourself it means the whole sentence is without merit, as it fails to adhere to English syntax,

Rewind the tape back and try and say what you meant there using actual words that mean something, as all I'm hearing is a high-pitched whine from someone who spoke nonsense and is trying to prop it up. Badly.

Shit, or get off the pot.

Turns out original manga are great for the first steps towards Japanese literacy, while subtitled anime are a gigantic waste of time if you don't know enough Japanese to understand at least 70-80% of what they say. A basic vocabulary of the 2000-3000 most frequently used words is required for that.

There were so many great Gundam animes I still have all the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing episodes on my pc.
I've seen some parts of the new ones the action and especially the animation looks really well done in them but the VAs are really bad and they only have english subs with no dub so I just couldn't get into them.

(Posting here because I'd rather not start a thread based around a simple question. Sorry op)
Why are physical manga so fuckin expensive? Its $35 if I want to buy 1 volume of Jojonium or 1 vizbig of Vagabond and $20 if I want to buy Parasyte or Tokyo ghoul.

I saw title "Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in the dungeon", found it amusing, and gave it a shot.

Also, general disappointment with western culture.

>What made you want to get into anime and manga in the first place?

Probably watching Sailor Moon when I was 5 in like 1994. It had a weird art style and you sort of had it in your mind it was foreign at that age but it drew you in because it was just so different. Just overtime I started to watch shit like Dragon Ball Z in 96 and eventually VHS copies of whatever anime movie or ova episodes available at Blockbluster. I was also thankful enough to know a few older kids (around 5 years older) in the neighborhood who bought anime vhs subs in the late 90's and our county had around 4-5 anime import stores which was a rarity in itself. I was watching Buu Saga by late 98 on crappy recorded tapes and that sort of gave me a more not so great perception of the Toonami dub of DBZ at the time.

But yeah DBZ and Sailor Moon got me into it. The rest was history. I'm sure many felt those two were their first experiences as well (excluding Pokemon).

Note: I'm not a huge weeb, I don't own toys, models, or manga (i'll read it online) and I tend to only come to /a/ for a few specific shows.

I watched anime until I was 8, realized it wasn't cool and hated it for 10 years, then my college roommate showed me TTGL. Rest is history, as they say.

I have no interest at dub, only sub. I can understand about 60% of japanese language for now and my goal is to watch them RAW one day.
