The biggest draw of the genre is animation porn. Studios sacrifice that in favor of toyetic value. Old shows with too many enemies to count, or new shows with designs so intricate they'd go bankrupt trying to animate them in 2D.

No one will turn you down with Gundam Build Fighters and IBO has been pretty popular abroad. Code Geass is also very popular but only the ones with 2D mecha.

Because appreciating mecha requires being willing to watch 24+ episodes of anime made in the 70's with a 2 dollars budget.
Or watching 40 episodes of monster of the week shit.
Or watching ovas which in most case actually require watching the anime they are based on to understand them.
And in most cases they are just long toy commercials.
You have to truly appreciate the mechanical desings and the sci-fi genre to get into mecha which requires a certain investment of time, not only to watch but also to obtain if you don't know where to look.

I like Evangelion, Gunbuster, Dangaioh, Bubblegum Crisis, and Patlabor.

I enjoyed TTGL and 8th MS team although I would never watch either one of them again because cringe.

I still don't like mecha overall.
