That was exactly Lucy's problem. She could have had an easy win against Flare by spamming the attack barber. Instead she tried to show off by revealing her biggest trump card and giving Orba the perfect opportunity to make it look like she just didn't have the mana to cast a huge spell. If Orba had pulled that shit on Lucy when she was just using a regular summon it would have been an obvious dirty play to pretty much everyone.

And now I'm also reminded that Lucy never used Gemini properly except for that time she had them copy Marin.

The characters were always going on some "My friends are waiting for me so I can't die here!" spiel. Lots of characters get cock-blocked from performing a heroic self-sacrifice and even get chastised for attempting it.

Possibly, but I think just living in Japan would be enough to make someone write a story with that as its heavy undertone. Suicide is such a goddamn problem in Japanese culture and it often plays out in almost darkly comical ways.
A while back a mother and her teenager both killed themselves because of a clerical error that said he failed one of those important graduation exams. By the time administration caught it, they'd already committed double suicide.

Post WWII, Japan became very critic over the practices they did in the war, like Suicide bombing, so you'll find that in plenty of manga aimed at teens, like One Piece Enies Lobby arc, for instance.
